In this presentation, Dr. Ron Bale draws on his vast clinical experience to shed light on important issues of assessment, clinical diagnosis, treatment, and other matters related to being a therapist. The presentation covers a wide range of topics including suicide assessment, addressing the highly emotive patient, the importance of dealing with countertransference, how and when to contain the patient. In all, the talk serves as an elegant orientation to the challenging ways in which a clinician maintains an analytic attitude that ultimately helps the patient.

Treating Women with Trauma and Substance Use Disorders

In this presentation, Dr. Gloria Miele discusses some hands-on suggestions for clinicians seeking to treat women who suffer from both a history of trauma and the effects of substance abuse. She draws on her book Trauma Services for Women in Substance Abuse Treatment to explore the intertwined nature of trauma and addiction. She will also discuss some treatment options for PTSD and addiction that together form the basis for many of the recently developed treatments for trauma and addiction co-morbidity. Dr. Miele will address some of the many real-world challenges that clinicians face in implementing trauma-focused therapeutic approaches in community-based substance abuse treatment.

Although Patrick Merrill has used the centuries old technique of woodblock printing to create this series of huge images describing his vision of the apocalypse, these images are shockingly contemporary, warning us of the dangers of greed, capitalism and addiction.
