Statement of LGBTQ Welcome and Inclusivity

California Lutheran University is an intentionally diverse community committed to inclusivity and respect for the dignity of each individual. As such, we seek to be a place of welcome for students, faculty and staff who are or come to know themselves as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons.

As a university of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), this is consistent with the church's policy, affirmed in 1991, "that gay and lesbian people, as individuals created by God, are welcome to participate fully in the life of the congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America."

In 1993 that declaration was extended to express "strong opposition to all forms of verbal or physical harassment or assault of persons because of their sexual orientation," and support for the civil rights of all persons, regardless of their sexual orientation. In this, CLU also conforms to the non-discrimination emphasis of the laws of the State of California.

The University is thus committed in every way to being a place of welcome for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people, and wishes them to understand themselves as valued participants in the common life and mission of the University. Conversely, it rejects discrimination toward and harassment of such persons as inconsistent with the community it desires to foster.

We realize that on matters of sexuality, there are continuing differences among and within the various religious traditions represented by people who call CLU home. We trust that in areas where we disagree, the power of God's presence can guide and unite us as we seek to reflect God's love in kindness toward our neighbor. As the heart of the Christian faith is trust in God's loving care for all, we can cherish a heritage which leads us to welcome and call together people of various cultures, values, faith and orientation to create a rich educational community.
