Clear Multiple and Single Subject Credential Program
Program Overview
Individuals who complete a teacher education program and receive a five-year (2042) Preliminary Credential must earn a Clear Credential by completing an approved Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA) program. If a BTSA program is not available through the employer, employed teachers may enroll in an approved program offered by a university.
The CLU clear courses may be taken as a stand alone program, or as a specialization within a master's degree program. Upon completion of the program, candidates will be eligible for the Clear Multiple or Single Subject Teaching Credential offered by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
Online option
All courses are offered in a fully online format to teachers meeting the eligibility requirement listed above.
Requirements
- The Clear Credential courses are offered as a one-year (Fall and Spring Semester) program. All entry is in Fall semester only.
- There are four courses (two are taken concurrently each semester)
- The courses are offered completely online in combination with the fieldwork done in your own classroom.
- Each course is 3 units (12 for the total program) payable at current graduate tuition rates

- Courses can be applied to our M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership Program if a master’s degree is desired
- You must be a full time teacher at a school that doesn't offer any type of CCTC approved induction program to clear your credential
- A copy of your employment contract is required for our files
- The school you work for must be accredited by a regional external accrediting agency such as WASC or another equivalent and recognized accreditor. Your principal or site administrator can provide you with that type of proof to provide us.
- You must have access to English Learners and students with special needs to fulfill the requirements of the program. If your school doesn't have students with those types of backgrounds, you will be expected to participate in fieldwork at another location that we arrange for you.
- You must select a support provider at your school site who will serve as your mentor. The support provider must hold a California CLEAR credential in order to serve in this role for the entire year. If a teacher is not available and you are within a reasonable distance from CLU, we will provide you with a qualified mentor at an additional cost of $500 per semester. If you are at a further distance, we will discuss other options for mentorship on a case by case basis with you.
