Jeff Gorell, J.D., adjunct professor of public policy, was first elected to the California State Legislature in 2010 and represents the 44th Assembly District. He is currently vice-chairman of the Assembly Budget Committee, and serves as a member of the Judiciary; Labor and Employment; and Utilities and Commerce committees. Assemblyman Gorell is an attorney with more than 20 years experience in California policy development and political communication. In the 1990s, he served on two presidential and two gubernatorial campaigns. From 1993 to 1996, he was a speechwriter and deputy press secretary to California Governor Pete Wilson. He then worked as director of communications for the California Manufacturers and Technology Association – a powerful statewide business group.
From 1999 to 2006, he then advocated before the California Superior Court as a deputy district attorney for Ventura County where he also drafted legislation and lobbied Sacramento for criminal justice reform. From 2006 to 2010, Gorell was corporate counsel and part-owner of a consulting firm that provided legal, government and community affairs guidance for business and economic development interests. He has represented energy, agriculture and water companies as well as statewide trade groups, auto dealers, and health care organizations.
Locally, he has served on the BRAC committee to save California’s Navy bases and as vice chairman of the board of directors for the American Red Cross of Ventura County. Mr. Gorell is also a Navy war veteran who currently serves as an intelligence officer in the reserves. He was decorated for two tours in Afghanistan.
At CLU he teaches Policy Advocacy; CA's Political Process; and founded the annual Sacramento Institute, which takes CLU students to the State Capitol every year.
