Announced recently by the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), seniors Cortney Jordan and Chad Kimmelshue were named the Cal Lutheran SCIAC Female and Male Scholar Athletes, respectively.

The announcement to the CLU community came at the Scholar Athlete Induction on May 11, but the complete league office release is now available.

Both student-athletes were four-year letter winners in their respective sports and made indelible contributions to the institution between 2009-13. Each was selected by the CLU Faculty Athletic Policies Committee.

Jordan, a Liberal Studies major, was not only a collegiate athlete while at Cal Lutheran, but she is a two-time Paralympian competing in Beijing (2008) and London (2012) and is an S7 American Record Holder in 17 events, 11 of which were set while swimming for the Regals.

Never thinking she would be able to participate in swimming at the college level, Jordan, born with cerebral palsy, described her experience as “an honor to have been a member of the swim team.” Not only was she a member, but she was voted as a team captain and made some of her best friends as part of the program. Jordan expanded her involvement at CLU beyond the pool. She was a Student Director at the Writing Center, a member of numerous clubs, including the triathlon club, Club Teach, MyLife, Phi Alpha Theta, History Club and has volunteered much time to working in the local elementary schools and coaching young swimmers. Immediately following graduation, Jordan will be relocating and training in Colorado Springs at the US Olympic Training Center for the Paralympic World Championships in Canada this summer. She has also signed on as a US Paralympic ambassador for the US Olympic Committee with the main goal of spreading awareness of the opportunities for disabled athletes. Once her professional career comes to a close, Jordan aspires to become a teacher.

At the induction ceremony, Jordan addressed those inside the Gilbert Arena for one of her first speeches by talking to the following four points:

The gift of being in the moment.

Passion for what you are doing.

Focusing on teammates and how others will remember you and how you can make others feel good.

Never-Ever giving up!

During her speech she also touched on the notion of cherishing differences, respecting others, assuming responsibility and having no regrets.

While Jordan was at the podium, Kimmelshue was in Florida competing at the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships for the second consecutive year.

Though Kimmelshue initially had his sights set on trying to obtain a scholarship to a Division I or II school, he credits his choice to attend CLU and become a Kingsmen golfer to be, “the best decision I could have made.” Choosing a college and career path is a hard decision and juggling the rigorous academic programs and participate in a time consuming sport makes the accomplishment all that much more rewarding.

Kimmelshue turned his focus to being able to play golf for the love of the game while also working closely with his professors to accomplish success in both facets. Surely student-athletes want to win and bring home a championship, but he described not having to worry about the pressures of losing a scholarship by saying, “I believe that frees us up as athletes, to play as well as we can and feel satisfied with having given it out best shot without having to look over our shoulder all the time.”

Kimmelshue took it upon himself to perform the best he could in both areas. His professors have worked closely with him and also encouraged his athletic endeavors. He proved that he was not just passing classes, but learning the materials and applying it. On the course, he was spending extra time at the driving range and putting greens to assure himself he was able to compete at the highest level. Because of the number of hours that go into his sport and his studies, Kimmelshue was forced to learn time management skills, as all student-athletes are. “As I worried about whether I would be able to fit everything into my schedule, it always seemed to work with the help of both Coach [Jeff] Lindgren and my professors,” he said.

Not only did he participate in athletics at CLU, but he was a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) with whom he volunteered reading to local elementary school children, at the Ventura County Rescue Mission and cooking and serving food to the homeless. On campus he was part of the Intramural Sports program as well. Off campus, he has spent countless hours teaching golf to young golfers and his family is very active at the Faith Lutheran Church in Chino where he has volunteered at a pair of homeless shelters, the Jesus Center and Torres Shelter, for as long as he can remember.

A Bioengineering major, Kimmelshue, who grew up on a farm in Northern California would like to apply his degree to either the agricultural or medical field. Because of the time he spent focusing on academics and athletics at Cal Lutheran, he plans to obtain an internship after graduation to get some more hands on and real-world experience before settling on a graduate school in the coming years. When he looks to the future, however, he shared that, “Ultimately I am fascinated by the possibility of enhancing production agriculture through bioengineering or working to make life easier for human beings through medical technology.”

The quality and diversity of students that Cal Lutheran attracts is unique. A large portion of the student body doubles as athletes each year. The passion, drive and commitment of those student-athletes make the Kingsmen and Regals who represent CLU, the SCIAC and Division III on a whole a successful and honorable group.

In 2003, Elaine Benditson inspired the concept and the Cal Lutheran Scholar-Athlete Society was created to acknowledge the academic achievements of CLU athletes. The institution believes it is important to give special emphasis to those students who are competing rigorously to achieve excellence in the classroom and in their chosen sport. The Kingsmen and Regals honored during the ceremony have each proven to bring equal dedication and discipline to both the classroom and chosen fields of play.

Boasting a 3.40 or higher cumulative grade point average during the academic year, the 2013 induction class was the largest in the 10-year history of the society. The inaugural class had 36 inductees.

Of the student-athletes who participated in 2012-13, 62% (307 of 493) earned a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. Nearly 30% (144) produced a 3.5 or higher GPA. The total GPA for all CLU sports teams this year was 3.147. Offering 20 intercollegiate sports, 16 of those teams produced higher team GPAs in 2012-13 than in 2011-12. Additionally, during the fall semester 12 athletes earned a perfect 4.0.

Following the presentation of gifts to those inducted, a pair of distinguished student-athletes was recognized. Senior golfer and bioengineering major Chad Kimmelshue and senior swimmer and liberal studies major Cortney Jordan were selected by the CLU Faculty Athletic Policies Committee as the Male and Female SCIAC Scholar Athlete, respectively.

While Kimmelshue was in Florida competing at the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships, Jordan, a two-time Paralympian and S7 American Record Holder in 17 events, took to the podium.

Going on to be an ambassador and speaker for the Paralympics, Jordan stepped up to the microphone where she engulfed the audience with a sincere and strong message. She spoke to four phenomenal points:

The gift of being in the moment.

Passion for what you are doing.

Focusing on teammates and how others will remember you and how you can make others feel good.

Never-Ever giving up!

During her speech she also touched on the notion of cherishing differences, respecting others, assuming responsibility and having no regrets.

Cal Lutheran attracts students from all walks of life and areas of the world. Its diversity is unique and the passion that each and every student possesses is special. For many, one of those passions is sport, in turn producing amazing student-athletes for the Kingsmen and Regals year in and year out.

This year Cal Lutheran was one of 30 teams to participate in a golf clinic, which was an eye opening opportunity for the Kingsmen, some of whom had never participated in a Special Olympics event.

“This was a great experience for our team,” head coach Jeff Lindgren shared, “It felt good to be able to give back to the community.”

On Sunday, May 12 at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort driving range and putting greens 30 teams were paired up with 30 Special Olympians.

The five CLU golfers took turns teaching Erick, a 31-year old Special Olympian, the basics of the game of golf. Besides playing some miniature golf along the way, Erick had never swung a golf club.

After the Kingsmen taught Erick basic golf skills, including grip, stance and set up, the participants took part in a rotation of games and fun contests.

“The event helped our guys keep everything in perspective,” Lindgren finished, “And allowed our team to relax and take their mind off the competition for a little while and realize that golf is just a game.”

Cal Lutheran was one of 41 teams, five of 210 student-athletes, to compete at the 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships. CLU placed 25th, 10 strokes off the advancing score after the opening two rounds.

Unfortunately for the Kingsmen, their two-day score of 624 was 10 strokes behind the cutline.

Mikey McGinn was the top overall golfer, finishing with a two-day score of 153 (+10). McGinn had an ideal start to his second round, birdieing the first three holes and getting to three over par for the tournament. Playing the back nine first, the junior would go to bogey the 14th and 16th to finish with a one-under par 35 heading into the turn. McGinn would go on to close it out with a second round 73.

Parker Colvin was the second leading golfer for the Kingsmen, finishing with a two-day score of 154 (+11). After a triple bogey on the last hole of the first nine, Colvin was even on the back including birdies on the second and fourth holes.

It would have been easy for Bobby Griffin to give up after taking a 12 on the tricky water-hazard filled par four 18th but the sophomore showed true grit on the back nine, piling up four birdies and finishing with a five over par 76. Griffin would have surely finished higher on the leaderboard outside of the 12 on 18, recording seven pars on the first nine.

Barret McGinnis shot 80 for the second consecutive day to finish with a combined score of 160 (+17). McGinnis was even through the first six holes to start the day and recorded birdies on the par-five seventh and par-four 13th.

Chad Kimmelshue improved his first to second round score by 12 shots, firing off a nine over 80 on Wednesday. For the second straight day, Kimmelshue played better as the round went on, registering six pars on the back nine.

Transylvania and Texas-Tyler are currently tied for the lead after both combining to shoot 579. Cameron Button of Southwestern Univ. is atop the individual leaderboard with a two-day score of 137 (-5).

The 2012-13 Kingsmen golf team concludes the season with three tournament wins and qualified for its second consecutive NCAA Golf Championships.

The Kingsmen were led Parker Colvin who shot a six-over par 78.

Nerves played a role on day for Cal Lutheran as the Kingsmen collectively had four bogeys and two double-bogeys during the first three holes. Despite the tough start, the Kingsmen would regroup and play better down the stretch, led by Colvin, who had birdies on the 10th and 14th hole and finished the second nine with a score of 39 (+3).

Mikey McGinn and Barret McGinnis both shot an eight-over par 80 while Bobby Griffin was right behind with a nine-over par 81. After a front-nine 41, McGinn rallied at the turn and shot 39 on the back including a pair of birdies. McGinnis was just one-over par after the first nine and played consistently on the back to turn on a 43 on the back-nine. Playing in his first NCAA Championships, Griffin led the Kingsmen with twelve pars on the day.

Senior Chad Kimmelshue never quite got in a rhythm on day one but still managed to record eight pars and finish with a 92 (+20).

Methodist, who shot 290, is the top team in relation to par (+2) as half the field played the par-71 Raven Course, and the other half, including Cal Lutheran played the par-72 Links course. The teams will switch courses for day two before playing rounds three and four at the Raven.

In terms of total strokes, St. John’s (Minn.) (292) sits in third, UT-Tyler (293) is fourth and Illinois Wesleyan is fifth (294) in the 41-team field.

The announcement came this morning, revealing the 41 teams and five individuals who will make up the field of 210 golfers to play at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Fla. from May 14-17 in an event being hosted by Methodist University.

This year 30 conferences were awarded an automatic qualification (AQ) for the championships. The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) automatic bid went to No. 8 La Verne, as the league champion in 2013.

Four teams were selected from Pool B, which consists of independent schools and schools that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for an AQ. The final seven berths were reserved for Pool C, which are schools from AQ conferences that were not the conference champion and any remaining Pool B teams.

Joining Cal Lutheran with a Pool C bid were SCIAC foes No. 14 Redlands and No. 19 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. It is the second straight year that the league will have four teams represented on the national stage next week, which is an indication of how competitive golf is in the conference.

The top five individuals were selected from the remaining players who had not qualified with a team.

The Kingsmen were paced all season by a pair of All-SCIAC honorees in No. 20 Mikey McGinn and Barret McGinnis. Also traveling to Florida as part of the five-man team are Parker Colvin, Bobby Griffin and Chad Kimmelshue. This will be the second NCAA tournament for Colvin, Kimmelshue and McGinn, who finished tied for 27th overall a year ago. The junior enters the weekend ranked number 20 in the nation. It will be the first national appearance for both Griffin and McGinnis.

All teams are guaranteed two rounds of play, one at The Raven Golf Club (par-71) and the other at The Links Golf Club (par-72). After the 36-holes, cuts will be made and the advancing teams will play the final two rounds at The Raven Golf Club to determine a national champion.

Oglethorpe (Ga.), the 2012 team champion, enters the event ranked No. 1 by Golf Stat. Methodist (N.C) comes in as the second ranked team and 2012 runner-up Transylvania (Ky.) is third.

Anthony Maccaglia, the 2012 individual champion, also returns to the course for Oglethorpe and is currently ranked atop the best Division III players in the country. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps’ Brad Shigezawa is ranked No. 2 with Mike Wesko (Methodist) rounding out the top-three individuals.

Cal Lutheran will travel on Saturday to get acclimated to the time and weather before a pair of practice rounds on Sunday and Monday before competition begins on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.

The duo helped lead CLU to a fourth place during the conference championships and also qualify for the Division III NCAA Golf Championships next week.

For McGinn, it was his second First Team selection in as many years. Playing the entire season as CLU’s No. 1, McGinn captured the Master’s College Invitational individual title earlier this season and has a team leading 72.7 stroke average. The Springville, Calif. was the top overall finisher for CLU at the SCIAC championships including shooting the low score of the final round with a four-under par 68. Looking ahead to the NCAA championships, McGinn will look to build upon his strong performance at the tournament where he finished in 27th.

Playing in his first full season for the Kingsmen, McGinnis enjoyed a breakout performance during the conference championships shooting a three-day score of 223 (72-72-79) and finishing in 10th place. McGinnis is currently second on the team with a 75 stroke average. His top overall finish this season came at the Texas Lutheran Invitational, helping CLU capture the team title while coming in fifth place.

SCIAC champion Brad Shigezawa of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps earned the Lee Fulmer Player of the Year award while John McCord of Redlands was named the Ken Sherman Freshman of the Year. Ricky Macias of Whittier received the Jess Clark Sportsmanship Award.

Lead by McGinn and McGinnis, Cal Lutheran now turns its attention toward the NCAA Championships held May 14-17 at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Florida. The Kingsmen earned one of the final seven Pool C at-large bids and will compete in the national tournament for the second consecutive year after not qualifying the five previous seasons.

After shooting 301 on Saturday and 300 on Sunday, the Kingsmen recorded an eight-shot improvement of 292 to finish in fourth place and just two shots behind third place Redlands.

Facing stiff competition, CLU got the best round of the day from Mikey McGinn who shot a final round 68 (-4) which give him a three-day score of 216 (72-76-68). The junior tied for the low-round of the day while finishing in a tie for fourth place.

Barret McGinnis, who was even par through the first 36 holes, completed his tournament with a final round 79 (+5) to give him a three-day score of 223 (72-72-79) while finishing in tie for 10th place.

One shot behind Kimmelshue was Parker Colvin who ended the day with a four-over 76. Shooting 80 during the first round and 75 during the second, Colvin’s three-day total of 231 was good enough for a tie for 23rd.

The Kingsmen, who finished second last year at the Championship, enter the tournament with a No. 17 national ranking and have won two tournaments this season.

Leading CLU through the par-72, 7,003 yard course layout will be Mikey McGinn. The junior who tied for sixth last year at the SCIAC Championship, comes in with a team-leading 74.6 stroke average. McGinn captured the individual title at the Master’s College Invitational earlier this season and has carded a low round of 68 during the West Cup in March.

Barret McGinnis will be playing in his first SCIAC Championship this year and comes in with a 76.8 stroke average. McGinnis’s best finish of the year came at the Texas Lutheran Invitational when he tied for fifth place after firing a 73.

Parker Colvin returns for his final conference championship after finishing in the top ten in two of the past three years. Colvin is third on the team with a 76.9 stroke average and had a season-low round of 71 twice this season with the first coming at the West Cup and the second in the Master’s College Invitational.

After shooting a team-low 75 at the SCIAC No. 2 and rallying the Kingsmen into third place, Bobby Griffin looks to carry the momentum into his first SCIAC Championship. In his first year as a part of the CLU top-five, Griffin has a stroke average of 77.8. The sophomore has carded 11 of his 14 rounds in the 70s this season with a low of 74 during the final round of the Texas Lutheran Invitational.

Finally, senior Chad Kimmelshue has his sights set on a top-five finish after finishing in sixth place at the tournament a year ago. A veteran of three SCIAC Championships, Kimmelshue owns a career 76.3 stroke average at the annual year-end tournament. This season, Kimmelshue boasts a 78.9 stroke average with his best round coming at the Texas Lutheran Invitational when he recorded an even par score of 72.

Standing in the way of Cal Lutheran and its first conference title since 2001 is six-time defending champion La Verne. Derek Zachman, the 2012 SCIAC Championships individual winner returns for the Leopards as does Kelby Scharmann, who came in sixth place a year ago. No. 12 Redlands and No. 13 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps also should contend for the conference team title.

The SCIAC Championships will feature a new format this season. Rather than a two-round tournament used in previous years, this year’s installment expands to three rounds. The first round begins at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. The second round starts at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 28, and the tournament concludes with the final round on Monday, April 29.

During the week of April 8-14, all members will host Division III Week, aimed at celebrating what those schools have to offer student-athletes in the classroom, in the field of play and in the community.

There are 178,441 DIII student-athletes as compared to 459,253 in Division I and II combined from coast to coast. Division III, however, represents the largest division in the NCAA at 40 percent of the total membership.

The NCAA sponsors 28 Championship events with 14 for men and 14 for women. There are also eight National Collegiate Championships. Overall, CLU sponsors 20 intercollegiate athletic programs, which is above the average (17) of like institutions.

Cal Lutheran is one of the 80 percent of active institutions that are private with 20 percent of DIII schools on public campuses. Across the board the average enrollment of Division III schools is 2,734.

All of the schools that fall in the Division III category are expected to promote the model of discover, develop and dedicate. CLU is right on track with that mantra by succeeding academically and athletically while giving back to the community.

In 2013 there will be CLU 147 student-athletes inducted into the Scholar Athlete Society by holding a 3.40 or higher cumulative grade point average. This number is higher than it has ever been and numerous student-athletes throughout the season have earned both Academic All-SCIAC and other sport specific academic accolades.

CLU teams have been just as successful on the field, court, course and in the pool with 10 teams earning national rankings in 2012-13. Both men’s golf and women’s water polo have held No. 1 rankings in their respective polls this year. CLU teams have claimed four Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) titles thus far with four teams and one athlete advancing to NCAA Championship play. The spring sports have much hope to increase those numbers with more than half of the teams in the hunt for a league title.

Beyond those two areas, CLU students have also taken time to give back. One example is the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) that is headed in 2012-13 by Lauren Rasmussen. She and the other SAAC members have put together a community service project in conjunction with DIII Week.

The group is scheduled to do a Ball and Old Sports Equipment Drive throughout the week of April 8-12. Items will be collected both at the Welcome Desk of the Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center during all hours of operation and in the Athletics Offices during operating business hours (9-5). Additionally, SAAC members will be stationed at the flagpole on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to collect items. All donations will be delivered to the Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Conejo Valley.

“The biggest thing with this event is that it is something that the SAAC wants to turn into an annual event during DIII Week and we are really excited about it,” Rasmussen said. “The connection to athletics with equipment collection, plus the opportunity to give back to the community by donating items that student-athletes are involved with competitively every day is very rewarding.”

Student Life will be sponsoring a series of student giveaways at a variety of athletic events during Division III Week as well.

Cal Lutheran sunglasses will be given out at Men’s Tennis against No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Poulson Tennis Center to kick off the weekend. On Wednesday, April 10 the water polo team will host Caltech and rally towels will be handed out at the entrance to the Samuelson Aquatics Center. Women’s Tennis fans will have a chance to claim sunglasses on Friday, April 12 when the Regals host Occidental at 2:00 p.m. At Hutton Field softball will host Redlands where seat cushions will be available for student fans at 2:00 p.m. At 3:00 p.m. in Ullman Stadium baseball fans can obtain a stadium cup as the Kingsmen host Whittier. Additionally, free Shave It coupons will be distributed to the first 250 students at any of the games.

Finally, the dining commons will be offering sports themed meals and snacks throughout the week, including a nacho bar, Dodger Dogs, peanuts and popcorn, BBQ Tri-Tip sandwiches and soft pretzels with cheese sauce.

“Excitement is beginning to be generated around Division III week on campus,” Director of Athletics Dan Kuntz shared. “We are looking forward to being a part of this unique campaign to promote Division III and the student-athletes we support year in and year out.”

CLU erased an eight-stroke deficit after the opening round to shoot a 301 and win at Vaaler Creek Golf Club today.

Not only did the Kingsmen lock up back-to-back titles at the Concan Invitational, but it also marks the first time in CLU golf history that a team has won the same event in consecutive years. Today’s tournament win also helped the men’s golf program earn another first as they had never before won three major events in the same season. The team victory today set a third program first for the Kingsmen by winning tournaments in back-to-back weeks in the same year. March 4-5 CLU won The Master’s College Spring Invitational before coming back seven days later to claim the TLU Concan Invitational.

All year the CLU golfers have pushed each other as they have turned in successful round after successful round. The consistency was apparent today as the five competing Kingsmen golfers all finished among the top-13 with four players separated by just one stroke apiece.

A shaky first day for Mikey McGinn was forgotten as the junior shot a day-low 73, to tie with individual tournament champion, Chance Cathey, the only golfer under par with a combined 143 (-1).

McGinn used an eagle on the 16th hole, capped off by a 20-foot putt, and a pair of birdies to climb the individual ladder today.

“I felt more focused in today’s round because I knew we had to shoot good scores today to pull out the win,” McGinn went on, “I was also much more comfortable with my club selection because the wind was not swirling like it was yesterday.”

Overall, he placed 13th with a 157 (+13) that included four total birdies and the eagle.

The second CLU golfer on the results sheet today was Bobby Griffin. The sophomore took six strokes off his day one total to shoot a second round 74. During the event he produced 23 pars, including 12 today, one shy of the leader, Jack Cerosimo from Concordia (Tex.). Griffin tied for ninth overall with a 154 (+10).

Showing his consistency for the Kingsmen throughout the two-day event was Barret McGinnis who used an equal 76 shots each round to pace the CLU pack and place tied for fifth with a 152 (+8). During each round McGinnis recorded four birdies to finish tied, with Cathey, for a tournament-high of eight.

Parker Colvin and Chad Kimmelshue each used 78 swings today to finish 11th and 12th, respectively, with overall scores of 155 (+11) and 156 (+12). Colvin also eagled the 16th hole, sinking a 50-foot putt from the bottom of a hill. In the 36-hole event, Colvin recorded 21 pars and four birdies while Kimmelshue posted 20 pars.

In two rounds, Cal Lutheran combined for 97 pars, one less than tournament leader Concordia (Tex.), 21 birdies, one shy of Southwestern (Tex.) and host TLU who produced 22 apiece, and a pair of eagles to tie with TLU for the lead.

Competing as an individual this week was Cody Price who finished with 19 pars as he placed 22nd with a 165 (+21).
