From April 4-6 she took the first step towards realizing that dream by competing at the U.S. Paralympics Spring Swimming Nationals/2013 Spring CanAm trials for World Championships at the University of Minnesota.

An S7 swimmer, Jordan holds 17 American records and she nearly set another one in the 50 Backstroke, just tenths of a second off the top pace.

At trials she also swam the 200 IM, 50 Free, 100 Free, 400 Free and 100 Back.

Late last week the U.S. Paralympic Committee announced the team of 25 set to compete at the 2013 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championship in Montreal, Canada and Jordan’s name appeared on that exclusive list. IPC World Championships will take place from August 11-17 and mark the first major gathering of international athletes since the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

The event will feature nearly 650 athletes representing 50 countries. The World Championships will be held at the Montreal’s Parc Jean Drapeau Aquatic Complex, a venue to the east of the city with a rich history for staging major international and national swimming competitions.

In the meantime, Jordan will continue to train at Cal Lutheran in the Samuelson Aquatics Center as she finishes up the spring semester of her senior year. She will graduate in May with a degree in Liberal Arts and a minor in Spanish.

There are 178,441 DIII student-athletes as compared to 459,253 in Division I and II combined from coast to coast. Division III, however, represents the largest division in the NCAA at 40 percent of the total membership.

The NCAA sponsors 28 Championship events with 14 for men and 14 for women. There are also eight National Collegiate Championships. Overall, CLU sponsors 20 intercollegiate athletic programs, which is above the average (17) of like institutions.

Cal Lutheran is one of the 80 percent of active institutions that are private with 20 percent of DIII schools on public campuses. Across the board the average enrollment of Division III schools is 2,734.

All of the schools that fall in the Division III category are expected to promote the model of discover, develop and dedicate. CLU is right on track with that mantra by succeeding academically and athletically while giving back to the community.

In 2013 there will be CLU 147 student-athletes inducted into the Scholar Athlete Society by holding a 3.40 or higher cumulative grade point average. This number is higher than it has ever been and numerous student-athletes throughout the season have earned both Academic All-SCIAC and other sport specific academic accolades.

CLU teams have been just as successful on the field, court, course and in the pool with 10 teams earning national rankings in 2012-13. Both men’s golf and women’s water polo have held No. 1 rankings in their respective polls this year. CLU teams have claimed four Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) titles thus far with four teams and one athlete advancing to NCAA Championship play. The spring sports have much hope to increase those numbers with more than half of the teams in the hunt for a league title.

Beyond those two areas, CLU students have also taken time to give back. One example is the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) that is headed in 2012-13 by Lauren Rasmussen. She and the other SAAC members have put together a community service project in conjunction with DIII Week.

The group is scheduled to do a Ball and Old Sports Equipment Drive throughout the week of April 8-12. Items will be collected both at the Welcome Desk of the Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center during all hours of operation and in the Athletics Offices during operating business hours (9-5). Additionally, SAAC members will be stationed at the flagpole on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to collect items. All donations will be delivered to the Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Conejo Valley.

“The biggest thing with this event is that it is something that the SAAC wants to turn into an annual event during DIII Week and we are really excited about it,” Rasmussen said. “The connection to athletics with equipment collection, plus the opportunity to give back to the community by donating items that student-athletes are involved with competitively every day is very rewarding.”

Student Life will be sponsoring a series of student giveaways at a variety of athletic events during Division III Week as well.

Cal Lutheran sunglasses will be given out at Men’s Tennis against No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Poulson Tennis Center to kick off the weekend. On Wednesday, April 10 the water polo team will host Caltech and rally towels will be handed out at the entrance to the Samuelson Aquatics Center. Women’s Tennis fans will have a chance to claim sunglasses on Friday, April 12 when the Regals host Occidental at 2:00 p.m. At Hutton Field softball will host Redlands where seat cushions will be available for student fans at 2:00 p.m. At 3:00 p.m. in Ullman Stadium baseball fans can obtain a stadium cup as the Kingsmen host Whittier. Additionally, free Shave It coupons will be distributed to the first 250 students at any of the games.

Finally, the dining commons will be offering sports themed meals and snacks throughout the week, including a nacho bar, Dodger Dogs, peanuts and popcorn, BBQ Tri-Tip sandwiches and soft pretzels with cheese sauce.

“Excitement is beginning to be generated around Division III week on campus,” Director of Athletics Dan Kuntz shared. “We are looking forward to being a part of this unique campaign to promote Division III and the student-athletes we support year in and year out.”

Opening up the final day of competition, sophomore distance swimmer, Mimi Harbach earned her second trip to the podium with a 1650 free swim of 17:40.00, which was more than 40 seconds faster than her previous best this season, and just two hundredths of a second shy of an NCAA “B” cut. She entered the race seeded fourth and moved up a spot to earn All-SCIAC recognition. Earlier this weekend Harbach was third in the 500 free.

Shelby Brooks and Kelli Miller both advanced to championship finals on day three as well. Brooks swam the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:10.52 to move up one spot and finish seventh after a morning swim of 2:11.15 to be seeded eighth.

After earning a trip to the consolation heat of the 100 breaststroke last night, Miller represented the Regals in the 200 breast final, placing seventh as she improved her time to 2:27.26 after earning the eighth and final spot in the race with a morning swim of 2:29.31.

Freshman Katie Kochalko nearly qualified for her second SCIAC championship race, but finished one spot out of contention in her preliminary swim in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:11.05. She swam faster in the consolation final, clocking in at 2:10.97, but dropped a spot to 10^th.  

In the preliminaries this morning there were a number of notable performances, starting with senior Cortney Jordan setting a Paralympic American S7 record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:39.88. She was a second off breaking her own record in the 200 butterfly with at time of 2:46.69 to place 23^rd.

Karissa Winkler was five hundredths of a second from being named the second alternate in the 100 free, touching the wall in 55.53. Taylor Faust and Sarah Forsythe were also top-25 finishers, placing 22^nd and 25^th, respectively, in 56.01 and 56.36. Brooke Hubbard finished 30^th in the 100 free (58.39) preliminary, which was her final collegiate individual race.

The weekend came to a close with the 400 Free Relay team of Julianna Rios, Harbach, Kochalko and Winkler combining to swim a 3:39.07, to touch the wall fifth.

Cal Lutheran finished the three-day event in sixth place with 287.5 points. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was crowned SCIAC champions with a total of 919 points, followed by PP (745.5), UR (486), OXY (467) and CU (359). Rounding out the field were WC (268), ULV (156) and CIT (130).

Caroline Chang from Occidental was named the 2013 Female Athlete of the Year.

Jordan swam the 200 backstroke faster than any other Paralympian in history, going a 2:39.88 in the first race of the final day at the 2013 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Redlands at Splash! La Mirada.

In the final race of her Regals career, Jordan was a second shy of breaking her own 200 butterfly mark, hitting the wall in 2:46.69 to round out an incredible career.

Though her Cal Lutheran swimming days are over, Jordan plans to continue her swimming career at the international level.

“I will still be training at Cal Lutheran,” Jordan shared. “The trials for World Championships are in Minnesota at the beginning of April.”

Jordan plans to swim a number of events and if she continues to cruise through the water at the rate she has over the last few years, she is sure to punch a ticket to the World Championships in Montreal this August.

Currently, Jordan holds the S7 American records in 17 events, 11 of which were set in Cal Lutheran swim meets over the last four years. The list of records she holds includes:

Just as she did yesterday, Machidaadded to the Regals point total by placing third on the one-meter diving boards as she earned a 365.40 on her 11-dive list. Completing the diving sweep and earning the 2013 SCIAC title in the event was Jessica Robson (412.85) from Occidental while second place went to Carmen Lundell (411.15) from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

In the championship final of the 400 Individual Medley (IM), defending SCIAC champion Mimi Harbach dropped to fourth place with a time of 4:36.50 after the sophomore qualified for the final as the number two seed, swimming a 4:36.21 this morning.

One day after making her first championship final appearance in the 200 IM, Katie Kochalko earned a trip to the consolation final of the 100 butterfly, nearly breaking a minute with a time of 1:00.11. She inched closer to that in the finals, going a 1:00.09 for 12^th place, three spots higher than her seeding.

The consolation final for the 100 breaststroke featured CLU junior Kelli Miller who moved up three spots to finished 12^th after lowering her time to 1:08.42. Her morning swim got her into the final as the 15^th swimmer in 1:10.24.

Also appearing in a consolation heat tonight was Shelby Brooks who nearly broke the one-minute mark in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.72 to move up to the 10^th spot. She entered the evening 13^th after a swim of 1:02.39 in preliminaries.

Juliana Rios was the second alternate for the second day in a row. Today she was the 18^th finisher in the 100 fly with a time of 1:00.65 after being named the second alternate in the 500 free yesterday. Rios also swam the 200 free on day two, breaking the two-minute mark in 1:59.55, placing 20^th.

Karissa Winkler and Alvina Wong were both top-25 finishers in morning heats in the 200 free and 100 breast, respectively. Each placed 24^th with times of 2:00.30 and 1:13.33.

The meet concluded with the 800 free relay, swum by Harbach, Rios, Winkler and Kochalko as the quartet combined for a time of 7:55.41, placing fifth.

An early start disqualified the 200 Medley Relay team in the opening event of the evening.

After the second day, Cal Lutheran remains in sixth with 208.5 points behind CMS (659), PP (519), OXY (341), UR (332) and CU (275.5). Rounding out the field are WC (204), ULV (105) and CIT (99).

Competition will culminate on Tuesday, Feb. 18 with preliminaries taking place at 9:00 a.m. followed by championship finals at 4:00 p.m. at Splash! La Mirada. Team award presentations will take place immediately following the event.

Sheyenne Machida earned the first points of the day for the Regals by placing third on the three-meter diving board beneath sunny blue skies on a warm February day. She held on to her seed spot from a week ago, finishing with a 332.15 on her 11-dive list behind Carmen Lundell (381.20) from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and 2013 SCIAC champion Jessica Robson (388.85) from Occidental.

In the first individual swimming final of the evening Mimi Harbach placed third in the 500 free, dropping her preliminary time of 5:10.98 by exactly four seconds to finish in 5:06.98 behind a pair of Athenas from CMS, Louisa Dunwiddie (5:04.61) and LillyBelle Deer (5:05.21). Harbach has been a finalist in the event each of her two seasons swimming for the Regals.

Katie Kochalko earned her first SCIAC final appearance in the 200 Individual Medley (IM) after swimming a preliminary time of 2:12.46 to be seeded eighth entering the final. Kochalko swam slightly slower, 2:12.58, but finished seventh.

In the morning session Juliana Rios swam a time of 5:20.56 in the 500 free to be named the second alternate. Taylor Faust was right by her side, finishing in 5:20.81 to place 19th.

Kelli Miller and Alvina Wong were separated by 64 tenths of a second to finish 25^th and 26^th in the 200 IM with times of 2:19.31 and 2:13.95, respectively. `

The 50 free saw Wong, Sarah Forsythe and Faust go 27-28-29.

CLU opened the meet up with Rios, Wong, Faust and Forsythe swimming the 200 Free Relay in 1:41.96 to place seventh.

Closing out the event for day one, the 400 Medley Relay team of Shelby Brooks, Miller, Kochalko and Rios combined to swim a 4:02 even, placing fifth for the Regals.

After day one, Cal Lutheran sits in sixth with 117 points behind CMS (279), PP (196), OXY (164), UR (143) and CU (141). Rounding out the field are WC (99), CIT (47) and ULV (35).

Competition will continue Monday, Feb. 18 with preliminaries taking place at 9:00 a.m. followed by championship finals at 4:00 p.m. at Splash! La Mirada.

Today Sheyenne Machida and Danielle Warmuth competed on the one-meter boards. Machida performed 11 dives while Warmuth stepped up on the springboards six times.

A repeat performance from yesterday saw Machidaagain placing third. The junior compiled a 342.27 as one of three divers to break the 300-point plateau.

A field of 17 was again paced by Jessica Robson (402.48) of Occidental with Carmen Lundell (372.06) from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps finishing second. Robson earned an NCAA qualifying mark at the meet.

CLU sophomore, Warmuth, earned a 125.31 to tie for tenth, but was just .42 points off the ninth place finisher as her season came to a close.

The top eight finishers will compete at the SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships set to be held at Splash! La Mirada Feb. 17-19.

Junior Sheyenne Machida placed third behind Jessica Robson (462.51) of Occidental and Carmen Lundell (418.41) from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps after posting a 320.79. All three performed an 11-dive list today.

Both Lundell and Robson earned provisional NCAA qualifying marks today.

Also competing for the Regals today was sophomore Danielle Warmuth. Her score of 121.08 came on a six-dive set.

A field of 17 was narrowed to eight with those divers advancing to the SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships set to be held at Splash! La Mirada Feb. 17-19.

Division III members passed legislation at the NCAA convention last Saturday allowing private communication with recruits through social networking sites like Facebook.

Coaches have been limited to phone calls, text messages, faxes and emails.

"There are not a lot of phone conversations that go on anymore and I don't think some kids even know what a fax is," CLU athletic director Dan Kuntz said. "Students are living and communicating in social media and I think the schools and coaches realize that. The one concern was privacy and not being intruded upon, but students are pretty savvy. When they don't want to be contacted, they know how to say not now."

Kuntz and James McHugh, the special assistant to the president for athletic affairs at CLU, represented the university at the convention in Grapevine, Texas.

Division III members considered 13 legislative proposals during the convention business session.

Along with the social media proposal, another proposal adopted was requiring confirmation of sickle cell trait status for all student-athletes no later than the 2014-15 academic year, including mandatory confirmation of status for all incoming student-athletes in 2013-14.

People with sickle cell trait have been shown to be more vulnerable than those without the trait to heat stroke and muscle breakdown when subjected to strenuous exercise under unfavorable environmental conditions.

Athletes can opt out of having the test, but will have to receive education regarding sickle cell trait status.

Given the concerns about costs, logistics and how the proposal related to other medical issues, the vote was close (254-200-15).

Not much will change at CLU as the university already required athletes to have the sickle cell trait test.

"There were a lot of conversations around this issue, but in the end it's really about the well-being of the student," Kuntz said. "If there is something we can do to help the well-being of the student, our mindset at CLU is to always do it. Our first priority is always to take better care of our students."

Kuntz said a topic he expects to be discussed in the future is establishing boundaries at the Division III level, where there are no athletic scholarships.

"Being less intrusive on students and offering a better work-life balance for the staff is huge," Kuntz said. "Division III is intended to have more restrictions because the emphasis is to allow student-athletes to be students. They need opportunities to study abroad and not have coaches on them year-round. We need to allow them to have a well-rounded experience."

Kuntz was attending the NCAA convention for the eighth time and can't wait to go back next year when it comes to San Diego.

"I think it's all fascinating because I can learn so much," Kuntz said. "There are so many good things and different ways to think about things and talk about these social issues that are in sports."

Sheyenne Machida won both diving events, earning a 188.65 on the one-meter and a 175.00 on the three-meter. Teammate Danielle Warmuth was second on the three-meter with a 137.25 and third on the one-meter.

Mimi Harbach continued to dominate SCIAC distance swimmers, winning the 1650 freestyle by more than 22 seconds in 18:21.98. She was then second in the 500, hitting the wall in 5:14.67. Harbach (2:00.47) was third in the 200 free behind teammate Katie Kochalko (2:00.22) as the duo swam stroke-for-stroke. The top spot went to Alex Lincoln who broke the two-minute mark, finishing in 1:58.29.

Kochalko went on to place third in the 200 butterfly, finishing in 2:19.97 and was fourth in the 100 fly with a time of 1:02.10.

Also finishing 2-3 for the Regals today in the 100 backstroke were Shelby Brooks and Brooke Hubbard with times of 1:04.40 and 1:07.16, respectively. Brooks placed fourth in the 200 back in 2:18.38 in a close race, off the third fastest time by just 29 tenths of a second.

The 400 Individual Medley saw Miller finish fourth, as one of three swimmers under the five-minute mark, in 4:58.88 with Brooks not far behind in 5:04.79.

Another second place finish today went to Karissa Winkler who swam the 100 free in 56.97, which was 25 tenths of a second behind Jenna Haufler from Pomona-Pitzer.

Nearly earning a first place finish in the 100 breaststroke, Kelli Miller (1:10.94) was slightly edged, by 82 hundredths of a second, by Mari Pettibone from Pomona-Pitzer. The swim in the 200 breast produced the same result as Miller swam a 2:32.78 for second.

Taylor Faust was third in the mile, finishing in 19:18.24.

Both CLU relays today combined for third place finishes. CLU opened the meet with the 400 Medley Relay team of Brooks, Miller, Kochalko and Juliana Rios clocking in with a time of 4:17.25. The meet concluded with Faust, Rios, Alvina Wong and Sarah Forsythe swimming the 200 Free Relay in 1:45.05.

Cal Lutheran (2-6) will send two divers to the SCIAC Preliminaries on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 9-10 at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center. The event will be hosted by Caltech and diving is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. each day.

CLU swimmer Mimi Harbach kept up her winning ways, placing first in all three individual races she competed in. Harbach got her day started by touching the wall first in the 1,000 free, finishing with a time of 11:03.55. The junior then took first place in the 200 free, winning in a time of 1:59.08.

Harbach’s last individual race of the day, the 400 IM was her most dominant. The Romeo, Mich. native won the race by 25 yards while finishing with a time of 4:40.82. Her time was more than 14 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

Sophomore Shelby Brooks won both the 100 and 200 backstroke. Her time of 2:15.95 was two seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

Freshman Katie Kochalko took first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:13.68 and sophomore Taylor Faust finished fourth. Kochalko also won the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:00.79.

Cal Lutheran placed second and third in the 100 free with Juliana Rios clocking in at 57.23 and Karissa Winkler right behind her at 57.53.

Kelli Miller rounded out the CLU winners on Saturday. The junior was victorious in the 200 breaststroke, touching the wall first in a time of 2:31.59, more than five seconds ahead of second place.

The Regals will be back in action next Saturday, Feb. 2, when they travel to Pasadena to take on Caltech and Pomona-Pitzer. The meet is scheduled to get underway at 10:30 a.m.

Highlighting the day were a trio of victories from Mimi Harbach in the 200 free (1:59.21), 500 free (5:19.64) in which she won by more than six seconds and the 200 Individual Medley (IM) in 2:15.63, winning by over five seconds. She opened the day by anchoring the 400 Medley Relay team that won in 4:13.01 as she teamed up with Shelby Brooks, Kelli Miller and Katie Kochalko for the victory.

Miller (2:34.41) and Kochalko (2:38.68) were the top two finishers in the 200 breaststroke. Kochalko went on to win the 100 butterfly (1:01.25) by 59 hundredths of a second and was second in the 200 fly in 2:14.47 while Miller (2:21.24) was second to Harbach in the 200 IM. Teammate Taylor Faust was third in the 200 fly with a time of 2:26.08, edging the fourth place finisher by 51 hundredths of a second.

In the 100 breaststroke Miller and Alvina Wong were the 2-3 finishers in 1:10.64 and 1:15.48, respectively. Brooks finished second in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.65 and the 200 back in 2:20.01. Karissa Winkler was second in the 1000 free in a time of 11:39.13 and Juliana Rios placed third in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 1:04.43.

The 400 Free Relay team of Faust, Brooke Hubbard, Winkler and Rios were just over two seconds off the winning time, combining to swim a 3:53.25.

Sheyenne Machida and Danielle Warmuth took the top two spots on the one-meter diving board today. Machida scored a 175.10 with Warmuth posting a 161.45. On the three-meter board Machida nearly repeated as champion but was edged by .8, taking second with a 167.75 to WC freshman Marisa Refe (168.55). Warmuth was third with a 150.65.

Cal Lutheran (1-5 SCIAC) will be back at the Samuelson Aquatics Center on Saturday, Jan. 26 when the Regals host Occidental at 10:30 a.m.

Harbach was the lone Regals swimmer to win any individual events, though teammate Sheyenne Machida earned a one-meter diving victory, defeating CMS diver Carmen Lundell who was previously undefeated on the one-meter board in 2012-13. 

Harbach started her big day by cruising to a victory in the 1650 free in a time of 18:26.42, winning the mile race by more than a minute over teammate Taylor Faust. The junior kept up her winning ways in the following race, taking first place in the 200 free with a time of 1:59.10. Harbach capped her day by winning the 500 free in a time of 5:16.04. It marked the second consecutive meet that Harbach has swept all three of her races.

Machinda scored a 196.10 in the one-meter diving competition, winning by a margin of more than 12 points. Fellow Regals diver, Danielle Warmuth, finished third with a score of 165.16. On the three-meter boards Machida and Warmuth placed second and third, respectively, with 170.50 and 120.05 finishes. Lundell took the event with a 209.80 for the Athenas.

Junior Kelli Miller finished second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.23, while teammate Alvina Wong came in fourth in 1:15.13.

Freshman Katie Kochalko just missed out on a victory in the 100 butterfly, finishing second with a time of 1.00.62, just a 16 hundredths of a second behind the first place finisher. She also earned second place points in the 200 Individual Medley, swimming a 2:16.56.

Faust was one of four Regals to place in the 50 free. Faust finished fourth with a time of 26.53 while Wong (26.87) was fifth, Shelby Brooks (27.21) came in sixth and Mary Wakabayashi (28.03) placed seventh.

Cal Lutheran placed third and fourth in the 100 free when Karissa Winkler took third with a time of 57:07 and Faust finished right behind her with a time of 58.26.

The Regals closed out the meet with a third place finish in the 200 Free Relay as Brooke Hubbard, Brooks, Kochalko and Wong combined to swim a 1:47.94. The CLU 200 Medley Relay team of Stephanie Yu, Miller, Wakabayashi and Winkler nearly broke the two-minute mark, joining to go a 2:00.95.

Cal Lutheran (1-3) will look to get back on the winning track Saturday, Jan. 19, when they travel to Whittier to take on the Poets. The meet is set to start at 10:30 a.m.

On a day when the Violet and Gold were edged, Mimi Harbach provided a spark with a trio of individual victories while teammate Katie Kochalko also earned a first place finish in the pool and diver Sheyenne Machida was the one-meter champion.

Harbach proved to be the strongest distance swimmer of the day as she handedly won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:12.11, nearly 30 seconds ahead of teammate Juliana Rios (11:42.21) who came in second, before swimming the 500 free in 5:22.85, winning by 13 seconds. She also earned the top spot in the 200 free (2:01.80).

On the one-meter board, Machida posted a 222.05 as the only diver to break the 200-point plateau as she won by more than 65 points. Her score placed her first in CLU history for a six-dive, one-meter set. She struggled on her second dive of the six-round three-meter event but finished third with a 157.00 behind a pair of Chapman divers.

The 200 Individual Medley went to Kochalko by a second and a half in a time of 2:17.79. In the 100 butterfly she hit the wall in 1:02.82 for second and went on to finish fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.73).

Kelli Miller swam a 1:12.73 100 breast for third, just 65 hundredths of a second off the second place pace. Miller also placed fourth in the 200 IM with a 2:22.57.

Sprinting for CLU, Taylor Faust went a 26.80 in the 50 freestyle, followed by Alvina Wong (27.64) and Mary Wakabayashi (27.94) for sixth and eighth, respectively.

Karissa Winkler swam to fifth in both the 200 free (2:04.97) and 100 free (57.73) and was sixth in the 500 free with a 5:40.17. Faust was stroke for stroke in the 100 free, posting a 58.67 sixth place finish.

Another CLU duo who swam hand in hand today was Stephanie Yu and Brooke Hubbard, going 1:09.30 and 1:09.71, respectively, in the 100 backstroke.  

The meet opened with the 200 Medley Relay in which Yu, Miller, Wakabayashi and Wongcombined to swim a 2:02.70 for third. Competition closed out with another third place swim in the 200 Free Relay as Wong, Hubbard, Rios and Faust joined forces for a time of 1:46.86, 21 hundredths of a second away from a second place finish.

Cal Lutheran (1-2) will be back in the pool Saturday, Jan. 12 when the Regals host the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas beginning at 10:30 a.m.

With Division I Pepperdine and Division III UC Santa Cruz making the trip from Malibu and Santa Cruz, respectively, the teams competed in a number of sprint races to kick of 2013.

To open the meet the women took to the one meter board and the men began on the three meter board with six dives apiece. Mid-way through the meet they swapped heights and performed a second six-set dive list.

Swimmers stepped up to the blocks for the 200 Medley Relay followed by a series of sprints in the form of 25 yard and 50 yard butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke races.

In addition, swimmers participated in the rare 100 meter individual medley. Today, there was a little bit of hype around that race when Cortney Jordan, a two-time US Paralympian, broke a 15 year old MS7 record in the event. The senior did not just break the mark set in 1998, she demolished is, swimming a 1:22.36 to break the previous time of 1:57.62 by more than 35 seconds, which is rather unheard of in swimming.

The Kingsmen and Regals used today as a lead-up for return to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition tomorrow when they travel to Redlands for a tri-meet with the Bulldogs and Chapman. Diving is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by swimming events at 11:00 a.m.

The CLU women’s team had one of their stronger showings in this young season. Sheyenne Machida won both dive competitions, finishing with a score of 191.25 in the one-meter competition and 159.10 in the three-meter.

Kelli Miller, Mimi Harbach and Katie Kochalko were CLU’s the other multi-event winners for Cal Lutheran on Saturday. Miller won the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.84 while also cruising to a victory in the 200 yard breast breaststroke in a time of 2:36.00.

Harbach won the 200 yard freestyle race with a time of 2:00.89 and freshman Karissa Winkler finished third with a time of 2:08.64. Harbach continued her winning ways as she took the 500 yard freestyle by nine seconds, ending with a time of 5:26.90. Harbach won third race of the day as she and Miller finished 1-2 in the 200 yard IM.

Freshman Katie Kochalko won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.26 while also being victorious in the 200 yard butterfly (2:13.06). Kochalko’s teammate Mary Wakabayashi finished third in 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1:10.17.

The Regals concluded their successful day by taking the 200 yard freestyle relay when Taylor Faust, Alvina Wong, Kochalko and Harbach combined for a winning time of 1:49.16.

The Cal Lutheran swimming and diving teams will be back in action after the New Year when they host the CLU invitational January 4, at 10:00 a.m.

CLU athletes earned a number of first place finishes. Mimi Harbach won the 400 Individual Medley (IM) by swimming a 4:43.37, Katie Kochalko won the 200 IM, completing the race in 2:16.01 and Sheyenne Machida won both the one and three-meter diving events.

On the boards for Cal Lutheran, Machidaand Danielle Warmuth went 1-2 on the one-meter with scores of 211.05 and 165.65, respectively. On the three-meter board they repeated as the top two finishers as Machida broke 200-points again with a 200.85 while Warmuth scored a 133.45.

Along with her 400 IM victory, Harbach was third in the 200 free (2:02.84), third in the 500 free (5:17.36), fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:20.36) and sixth in the 100 back (1:09.10).

Kochalko went on to finish fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:35.26), fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:02.92), fifth in the 100 breast (1:13.93) and fifth in the 400 IM (4:49.48).

The CLU relay teams turned in solid performances.  

Brooke Hubbard, Taylor Faust, Kochalkoand Harbach placed second in the 800 Free Relay with a time of 8:17.01. Faust led off the 400 Free Relay, followed by Kelli Miller, Harbach and Kochalko to place third in a time of 3:46.79. Kochalko, Harbach, Karissa Winkler and Faust combined to swim the 200 Free Relay in 1:47.31 to take third.

Harbach, Miller, Kochalko and Faust swam a 4:24.90 400 Medley Relay for fourth and the same team completed the 200 Medley Relay in 2:00.96 for fifth. .

Faust finished fifth in the 100 free (57.82), seventh in the 50 free (26.58) and eighth in the 400 IM (5:06.93). Faust was also ninth in the 200 free with a time of 2:06.68 behind Juliana Rios who hit the wall in 2:05.91. Rios also placed fifth in the 1650 (19:37.57), sixth in the 100 fly (1:04.77), seventh in the 100 free (57.89), seventh in the 500 free (5:31.74).  

Winkler was sixth in the 1650 (19:45.66) and tenth in both the 50 free (27.08) and 500 free (5:36.55). She swam the 200 free in a time of 2:05.84.

Millerwas third in the 100 breast (1:12.98) and 200 breast (2:32.99) while Alvina Wong was sixth in the 200 breast (2:43.13) and tenth in the 100 breast (1:15.94). Miller was fourth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:22.01 and Wongwas right being in eighth with a time of 2:23.92.

Hubbard was the top CLU finisher in the 100 backstroke in 1:07.26 followed by Harbach, Stephanie Yu (1:09.55) and Katrina Brown (1:23.87). Yu went on to finish eighth in the 200 back in 2:30.43.

Cortney Jordan hit the wall in 2:47.42 in the 200 fly to finish seventh. Mary Wakabayashi placed tenth in the 100 fly with a swim of 1:08.78.

Cal Lutheran will open Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition Saturday, Dec. 8 when the teams travel to La Verne to take the blocks against the Leopards beginning at 10:30 a.m.

On the one-meter board Sheyenne Machida was second to Southern California Intercollegiate Conference (SCIAC) foe Carmen Lundell from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Machida posted a 206.50 on her six dive set as the only other diver besides Lundell (240.75) in the field of 20 to break the 200-point mark. 

The best dive of the day for the junior came in the fifth round on her back dive, straight, as she received three scores of 7.5 from the judges. She opened with a piked one and a half that she scored 34.0 points on, second to the 34.85 she earned on the back dive.

Danielle Warmuth scored a 136.75 to place 10^th. Her dive list was highlighted by her forward piked one and a half as well. She was equally impressive on her inward tucked somersault, scoring 28.80 points apiece on each of those two dives.

Also competing for Cal Lutheran today was Juliet Campbell who scored an 85.85 despite taking 0.0’s on her third round, reverse dive.

In three-meter competition Machida placed third behind Lundell (250.65) and Miranda King from Cal Baptist (226.65) with a score of 181.60 as the only CLU representative in the competition. Her final dive of the day, a back one and a half with a half twist, earned her the highest score of the day with a 36.00.

Cal Lutheran swimming and diving will be on the road Nov. 30-Dec. 2 when they travel to the Finis Invitational in Northern California.

But Cortney Jordan had a valid excuse.

The Cal Lutheran swimmer was representing her country at the Paralympics and making a quick trip to the White House to meet the president.

Jordan, 21, competed in six events in London and captured four medals — three silvers and a bronze.

"It is kind of weird coming back here because I was just in a dream world for so long and only had to focus on swimming," Jordan said last week after returning to CLU. "Now, I come back and have to focus on swimming, focus on work and focus on catching up in school. It's really stressful right now."

Jordan, a Henderson, Nev., resident, was born with cerebral palsy and has a shorter, weaker left side of her body. She walks with a limp and has endured back problems.

Jordan first competed in the Paralympics four years ago in Beijing, where she won four medals.

In her return appearance in London, she was designated one of four team captains for the U.S. swim team.

"It was a lot different this time because I knew what I was getting into. Before, I had no idea what I was doing," Jordan said. "I had more experience and I had a role to play on the team instead of just being a rookie. I had to take a leadership role and do my best to help others as well as myself."

After completing her junior year at Cal Lutheran, Jordan moved to Minnesota to train with U.S. Paralympic head coach Tom Franke. She lived with Franke and his family.

"I just swam and trained. I had zero life this summer," Jordan said. "I was swimming in the morning and then training in the afternoons again. It really helped me because I got rid of all the distractions and it allowed me to just focus on swimming."

The extra work paid off as Jordan posted personal-best times in five of her six events.

"My classification got a lot more competitive within the four years, so I knew I would need to get my best times to win a medal," she said. "I just wanted to win one medal, so the fact I got four is completely thrilling."

Jordan was equally as thrilled when she learned she was going to be a team captain in London. The selections were announced during training camp.

"I cried," Jordan said. "I am a happy crier. I was so honored and I couldn't even contain my happiness. I cry at all the happy moments. Every time I was on the podium I was crying. I don't really like that about myself, but I'm just so happy I can't contain myself."

Following the closing ceremonies in London, Jordan flew directly to Baltimore to visit the White House in Washington with several other U.S. Olympians and Paralympians.

She was able to shake hands with President Barack Obama and received a hug from first lady Michelle Obama.

"It was just such an honor to be there and have them recognize us," Jordan said. "They were all extremely welcoming and Obama was wonderful. He tried to shake everyone's hand, which I think he did."

Jordan was also treated to a more exclusive visit to the Pentagon. She was serving as a guide for fellow Paralympic swimmer Brad Snyder, a Navy lieutenant who was blinded after stepping on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.

Jordan had some prior familiarity with the Pentagon. Her father was a colonel in the Air Force and used to work there.

"I was super little the last time I went, and it was nice to go again and get another feel for it," Jordan said. "I got to meet the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It was very memorable."

But once the Washington visit ended, it was finally back to reality for Jordan.

She arrived at Cal Lutheran with assignments to complete and job responsibilities as the student director of the CLU Writing Center.

Although some students and teachers know about her medal-winning exploits, Jordan has not achieved celebrity status on campus.

"That would be kind of weird. I am pretty low-key and I like just being a part of the school," she said. "I don't really like being the center of attention, so I am glad I can just blend in and study."

Jordan didn't bring her medals with her to CLU. She gave them to her parents to take home to Nevada.

Jordan is hoping to add a few more to her collection in four years at Rio de Janeiro.

"Both of my experiences at the Paralympics have been phenomenal," she said. "I would love to go back again."

Representing the USA in her second Paralympic Games, Jordan earned her way onto the podium for silver in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 400 freestyle and came away with a bronze in the 100 backstroke. She was a place away from a bronze in the 200 IM and also swam the 100 breaststroke.

Jordan and her teammates were able to enjoy a few competition free days in London before last night’s closing ceremonies.

The CLU senior will return to Thousand Oaks later this week, but will make a very special stop in our nation’s capital before doing so.

Overall the USA Paralympic team earned 98 medals in London.
