In 2003, Elaine Benditson inspired the concept and the Cal Lutheran Scholar-Athlete Society was created to acknowledge the academic achievements of CLU athletes. The institution believes it is important to give special emphasis to those students who are competing rigorously to achieve excellence in the classroom and in their chosen sport. The Kingsmen and Regals honored during the ceremony have each proven to bring equal dedication and discipline to both the classroom and chosen fields of play.

Boasting a 3.40 or higher cumulative grade point average during the academic year, the 2013 induction class was the largest in the 10-year history of the society. The inaugural class had 36 inductees.

Of the student-athletes who participated in 2012-13, 62% (307 of 493) earned a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. Nearly 30% (144) produced a 3.5 or higher GPA. The total GPA for all CLU sports teams this year was 3.147. Offering 20 intercollegiate sports, 16 of those teams produced higher team GPAs in 2012-13 than in 2011-12. Additionally, during the fall semester 12 athletes earned a perfect 4.0.

Following the presentation of gifts to those inducted, a pair of distinguished student-athletes was recognized. Senior golfer and bioengineering major Chad Kimmelshue and senior swimmer and liberal studies major Cortney Jordan were selected by the CLU Faculty Athletic Policies Committee as the Male and Female SCIAC Scholar Athlete, respectively.

While Kimmelshue was in Florida competing at the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships, Jordan, a two-time Paralympian and S7 American Record Holder in 17 events, took to the podium.

Going on to be an ambassador and speaker for the Paralympics, Jordan stepped up to the microphone where she engulfed the audience with a sincere and strong message. She spoke to four phenomenal points:

The gift of being in the moment.

Passion for what you are doing.

Focusing on teammates and how others will remember you and how you can make others feel good.

Never-Ever giving up!

During her speech she also touched on the notion of cherishing differences, respecting others, assuming responsibility and having no regrets.

Cal Lutheran attracts students from all walks of life and areas of the world. Its diversity is unique and the passion that each and every student possesses is special. For many, one of those passions is sport, in turn producing amazing student-athletes for the Kingsmen and Regals year in and year out.

After a three-match weekend the Regals tied for seventh in the overall standings.

Cal Lutheran entered as the No. 7 seed and faced a tough Pomona-Pitzer team in the opening round, falling 5-0 as teams play to a winner not conclusion in the first round of action this weekend. The second match pitted CLU against Chapman and after a decision was made at 5-1 in favor of the Panthers, the coaches opted to end competition due to high heat. Saturday, the Regals concluded the season against Caltech, dropping the final contest of the spring 6-3.

On day one in the tournament opener Pomona-Pitzer took control of the match early with a doubles sweep. Carly Mouzes and Jacqueline Ramsay took three sets against Arthi Padmanbhan and Lea Lynn Yen at number three, but fell 8-3.

In singles, Katie Carroll made her season debut, but dropped a set at No. 6 by scores of 6-0, 6-0 to Marissa Cohen. Amber Rexford made her SCIAC debut after appearing in four matches for CLU throughout the season and also fell 6-0, 6-0 to Padmanbhan on the number four court.

Cal Lutheran went on to fall 5-1 to Chapman in the second round of play on Friday afternoon at the Biszants Family Tennis Center at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

The doubles duo of Emily Werman and Sarah Baker earned the only point of the day for the Regals with an 8-4 win over Andrea Hammer and Kelly Klebenow in the top spot. CLU nearly took a 2-1 lead after the opening three matches, but the number three team fell by an 8-6 margin.

Baker made a late run in the second set of singles play on court three, before falling 6-0, 6-3. Lindsay Murphy was defeated at No. 1 by scores of 6-0 and 6-1 and the match came to a close when Klebenow blanked Lauren Toohey 6-0, 6-0.

Saturday during the season finale, CLU met Caltech. The Beavers won a play-in match on Tuesday, April 30, defeating Occidental for the eighth and final spot in the tournament.

Toohey and Ramsay earned the first point of the day for the Regals with an 8-2 victory over Jessica Yeung and Michelle Lee. Number two doubles for CLU gave CIT a run, falling 8-6. Werman and Baker were defeated 8-3 on the number one court.

Mouzes turned in a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Stephanie Kwan playing at No. 3 for the second Cal Lutheran point of the match. CLU newcomer Irina Ebert was responsible for the final win, with a three-set 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 defeat of Lee on court number four.

Cal Lutheran (5-19, 2-9 SCIAC) finished the season in eighth and bids farewell to two seniors. In the final match of her collegiate career, Toohey turned in a doubles victory and Mouzes capped her career off with a singles win.

Nationally ranked No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps claimed the 2013 crown with a 7-2 win over Pomona-Pitzer to cap off an undefeated season. Redlands defeated La Verne for third and Whittier beat Chapman for fifth. Caltech and Cal Lutheran, respectively, rounded out the tournament.

Entering as the No. 7 seed, Cal Lutheran (5-16, 2-7 SCIAC) has struggled this season. The two league victories they posted came against Caltech (Mar. 1) and Occidental (Apr. 12).

The Regals will meet PP in the opening round on Friday. Teams will begin play at 10:00 a.m. at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center at CMS.

Leading the way for Cal Lutheran this spring has been freshman Emily Werman who was 7-12 in singles action. She won a match at the No. 1 spot before splitting time at No. 2 and No. 3 with four and two wins, respectively.

Sarah Baker, Carly Mouzes and Lauren Toohey turned in six wins apiece for CLU during singles play. Baker won twice as the Regals No. 2 and four matches in the three spot. Mouzes played primarily as the number four and won five of her six matches there. In her only appearance as the No. 3, against Biola, she was victorious. Toohey was a two-time winner at No. 5 and came away with four victories as the number six player this season.

In doubles action, Mouzes and Lindsay Murphy teamed up for a squad-high eight wins and won at all three spots. As the number one team they defeated Biola on Feb. 15. Mouzes and Murphy won four times at No. 2 and three times on the third court.

Werman and Baker were victorious five times as the No. 1 doubles team for the Regals. Additionally, Murphy also chipped in with five singles points during the regular season.

Leading the standings entering the weekend is undefeated and nationally No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (25-0, 8-0) followed by No. 14 Pomona-Pitzer (12-5, 7-1) and No. 9 Redlands (17-2, 6-2). Host No. 29 La Verne (12-6, 5-3) is also among the top-30. Rounding out the field are Whittier (11-7, 4-4), Chapman (4-11, 3-5), CLU and Caltech (6-12, 1-7). The Beavers defeated Occidental 5-0 on Tuesday during a play-in match.

Clad in gold tops the CLU team competed in doubles action with the top duo of Emily Werman and Sarah Baker battling in an 8-6 loss to Jeanette Losaria and Laina Matsuda. On the number three court senior Carly Mouzes and Lindsay Murphy fell by an 8-5 margin to Megan Soucy and Carly Tucker. The No. 2 team was swept, 8-0.

In singles play, CLU had a pair of chances to earn third set victories, but those too came up short. Mouzes (3-6, 6-3, 0-1) and Jacqueline Ramsay (4-6, 6-3, 0-1) each fell early and stole their second set before dropping the tiebreakers to Allison Moncrief and Shenelle Trujillo, respectively, on the fifth and sixth courts.

Werman made a run at No. 3 singles, pulling the score in the second set to 6-4, but the deficit to Matsuda was too much to overcome in a 6-2, 6-4 loss.

CLU recognized Mouzes and Lauren Toohey prior to the match as they appeared in Violet and Gold at home for the final time.

Cal Lutheran (5-16, 2-5 SCIAC) will be off for two weeks before competing in the 2013 SCIAC Tournament. This year the event will be hosted by La Verne on May 3-4. Currently the Regals are seventh in the league standings. There will be a play-in game between the No. 8 and No. 9 teams on Tuesday, April 30 to finalize the bracket.

During the week of April 8-14, all members will host Division III Week, aimed at celebrating what those schools have to offer student-athletes in the classroom, in the field of play and in the community.

There are 178,441 DIII student-athletes as compared to 459,253 in Division I and II combined from coast to coast. Division III, however, represents the largest division in the NCAA at 40 percent of the total membership.

The NCAA sponsors 28 Championship events with 14 for men and 14 for women. There are also eight National Collegiate Championships. Overall, CLU sponsors 20 intercollegiate athletic programs, which is above the average (17) of like institutions.

Cal Lutheran is one of the 80 percent of active institutions that are private with 20 percent of DIII schools on public campuses. Across the board the average enrollment of Division III schools is 2,734.

All of the schools that fall in the Division III category are expected to promote the model of discover, develop and dedicate. CLU is right on track with that mantra by succeeding academically and athletically while giving back to the community.

In 2013 there will be CLU 147 student-athletes inducted into the Scholar Athlete Society by holding a 3.40 or higher cumulative grade point average. This number is higher than it has ever been and numerous student-athletes throughout the season have earned both Academic All-SCIAC and other sport specific academic accolades.

CLU teams have been just as successful on the field, court, course and in the pool with 10 teams earning national rankings in 2012-13. Both men’s golf and women’s water polo have held No. 1 rankings in their respective polls this year. CLU teams have claimed four Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) titles thus far with four teams and one athlete advancing to NCAA Championship play. The spring sports have much hope to increase those numbers with more than half of the teams in the hunt for a league title.

Beyond those two areas, CLU students have also taken time to give back. One example is the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) that is headed in 2012-13 by Lauren Rasmussen. She and the other SAAC members have put together a community service project in conjunction with DIII Week.

The group is scheduled to do a Ball and Old Sports Equipment Drive throughout the week of April 8-12. Items will be collected both at the Welcome Desk of the Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center during all hours of operation and in the Athletics Offices during operating business hours (9-5). Additionally, SAAC members will be stationed at the flagpole on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to collect items. All donations will be delivered to the Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Conejo Valley.

“The biggest thing with this event is that it is something that the SAAC wants to turn into an annual event during DIII Week and we are really excited about it,” Rasmussen said. “The connection to athletics with equipment collection, plus the opportunity to give back to the community by donating items that student-athletes are involved with competitively every day is very rewarding.”

Student Life will be sponsoring a series of student giveaways at a variety of athletic events during Division III Week as well.

Cal Lutheran sunglasses will be given out at Men’s Tennis against No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Poulson Tennis Center to kick off the weekend. On Wednesday, April 10 the water polo team will host Caltech and rally towels will be handed out at the entrance to the Samuelson Aquatics Center. Women’s Tennis fans will have a chance to claim sunglasses on Friday, April 12 when the Regals host Occidental at 2:00 p.m. At Hutton Field softball will host Redlands where seat cushions will be available for student fans at 2:00 p.m. At 3:00 p.m. in Ullman Stadium baseball fans can obtain a stadium cup as the Kingsmen host Whittier. Additionally, free Shave It coupons will be distributed to the first 250 students at any of the games.

Finally, the dining commons will be offering sports themed meals and snacks throughout the week, including a nacho bar, Dodger Dogs, peanuts and popcorn, BBQ Tri-Tip sandwiches and soft pretzels with cheese sauce.

“Excitement is beginning to be generated around Division III week on campus,” Director of Athletics Dan Kuntz shared. “We are looking forward to being a part of this unique campaign to promote Division III and the student-athletes we support year in and year out.”

Cal Lutheran looked sharp to start the match as the No. 1 doubles pairing of Emily Werman and Sarah Baker made quick work of Maegan Zamilpa and Liliana Serylo, defeating the Whittier duo 8-3 for their fourth win of the year.

The Regals’ No. 2 pairing of Lauren Toohey and Jacqueline Ramsay couldn’t quite find their footing against Adrienne Hamada and Benay Weintraub, falling 8-3 but Cal Lutheran retook the lead when Carly Mouzes and Lindsay Murphy combined for their seventh win of the year when they defeated Lauren Geglur and Bree Campanero 9-8 in the No. 3 doubles match.

Werman earned her team-leading sixth singles win of the year in the No. 2 match when she took down Serylo in impressive fashion, winning 6-1, 6-0.

Unfortunately for CLU, the Regals were unable to maintain their lead as Whittier captured the rest of the five singles matches. Mouzes came the closest to salvaging a point when she tied Weintraub at 5-5 in the second set but the senior couldn’t quite piece together the shots and fell 7-5.

Cal Lutheran (4-15, 1-5 SCIAC) closes out its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) schedule when it takes on Occidental and La Verne April 12-13. The Regals took three different singles matches to three sets against the top rated team in the region.

CMS, did however, cruise to three points in the doubles matches. The No. 1 duo of Crystal Lim and Caroline Ward defeated Cal Lutheran’s Emily Werman and Jacqueline Ramsay 8-0. CLU’s No. 2 doubles pairing of Lindsay Murphy and Carly Mouzes also fell 8-0 to Yvonne Likomanova and Sarah Kukino. CMS got the final doubles match win with Erin Coughlan and Victoria Nichols defeated Lauren Toohey and Sarah Baker 8-3.

The Regals wouldn’t go down without a fight in the singles matches however. After Lim defeated Murphy 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match, Werman took the first set 6-2 against Likomanova in the No. 2 match. Likomanova rallied to take the second set 6-2 to send the match into a third set tie-breaker. Werman battled neck-and-neck with Likomanova before she fell 10-8 in the tie-break.

In the No. 3 singles match, Baker dropped the first set to Coughlin 6-1 but rallied to win the second 6-4. Much like Werman, Baker hung on tough in the tie-breaker but couldn’t quite get over the hump as Coughlin took the third-set 10-6.

Mouzes won her first set against Nichols in the No. 4 singles match 6-4. Nichols rebounded with a 6-2 victory in the second-set to send CLU and CMS to their third-straight match that needed a tie-breaker. Mouzes initially led but couldn’t quite hold on as she fell 10-7 to Nichols.

Cal Lutheran played well in the doubles portion of the match with the No. 2 pairing of Carly Mouzes and Lindsay Murphy rallying to win a thrilling 9-7 match over Auvi Tran and Jean-Jean Gwo.

CLU’s No. 1 duo of Sarah Baker and Emily Werman had their chances to take the match but couldn’t quite overcome some effective volleys from Casey Johnson and Rachel Houston, falling 8-4.

The Regals’ fate was not the same as the last two matches as Redlands powered past CLU, 9-0, in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener for both squads.

Ranked No. 24 in the nation, the Bulldogs took an early 3-0 lead after doubles and never looked back.

The freshman-sophomore No. 1 duo of Emily Werman and Sarah Baker put up a fight after finding a rhythm mid-way through the match, but fell 8-4. Both the No. 2 and No. 3 teams dropped 8-2 decisions.

In singles action, Werman went on to battle Natalie Etchegary, falling 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 1 spot. Both Baker and Lauren Toohey lost, 6-1, 6-2, occupying the No. 2 and No. 6 positions, respectively, today.

Redlands earned 6-0, 6-0 wins on the No. 3, 4, and 5 courts in the sweep.

Cal Lutheran (2-2, 1-0 SCIAC) will next be in action on Friday, Feb. 15 when they play host to non-conference Biola at 2:00 p.m.
