In 2003, Elaine Benditson inspired the concept and the Cal Lutheran Scholar-Athlete Society was created to acknowledge the academic achievements of CLU athletes. The institution believes it is important to give special emphasis to those students who are competing rigorously to achieve excellence in the classroom and in their chosen sport. The Kingsmen and Regals honored during the ceremony have each proven to bring equal dedication and discipline to both the classroom and chosen fields of play.

Boasting a 3.40 or higher cumulative grade point average during the academic year, the 2013 induction class was the largest in the 10-year history of the society. The inaugural class had 36 inductees.

Of the student-athletes who participated in 2012-13, 62% (307 of 493) earned a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. Nearly 30% (144) produced a 3.5 or higher GPA. The total GPA for all CLU sports teams this year was 3.147. Offering 20 intercollegiate sports, 16 of those teams produced higher team GPAs in 2012-13 than in 2011-12. Additionally, during the fall semester 12 athletes earned a perfect 4.0.

Following the presentation of gifts to those inducted, a pair of distinguished student-athletes was recognized. Senior golfer and bioengineering major Chad Kimmelshue and senior swimmer and liberal studies major Cortney Jordan were selected by the CLU Faculty Athletic Policies Committee as the Male and Female SCIAC Scholar Athlete, respectively.

While Kimmelshue was in Florida competing at the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships, Jordan, a two-time Paralympian and S7 American Record Holder in 17 events, took to the podium.

Going on to be an ambassador and speaker for the Paralympics, Jordan stepped up to the microphone where she engulfed the audience with a sincere and strong message. She spoke to four phenomenal points:

The gift of being in the moment.

Passion for what you are doing.

Focusing on teammates and how others will remember you and how you can make others feel good.

Never-Ever giving up!

During her speech she also touched on the notion of cherishing differences, respecting others, assuming responsibility and having no regrets.

Cal Lutheran attracts students from all walks of life and areas of the world. Its diversity is unique and the passion that each and every student possesses is special. For many, one of those passions is sport, in turn producing amazing student-athletes for the Kingsmen and Regals year in and year out.

In a battle of the fifth place consolation final it was the Regals who took an early 5-2 advantage on the Panthers. The Violet and Gold added four unanswered goals in the second stanza to lead 9-2 at the intermission. Two more in the third and six in the final frame were too much of a gap for CU to contend with.

Today marked the sixth consecutive game in which Cal Lutheran has held its opposition to single digit scoring asfour seniors donned CLU colors for the final time.

In her final appearance in the pool Morgan McCardell made it one to remember with a five-goal game. Classmates Jane Galluzzi and Shannon Streeter scored twice and once, respectively, for the Regals with Galluzzi also grabbing three steals.

Senior goalie Kylee Tomasetti played her final four quarters guarding the cage and turned away eight shots, adding a steal in the win.

CLU possessed a balanced attack, scoring twice in each quarter and holding LV to just two goals in the first half. A three-goal third period allowed the Leos to claw back into the game, but the defense stepped up in the final frame to limit La Verne to a single goal.

Senior Shannon Streeter recorded a hat-trick with three goals while Kehau Ai, Amanda Jones, Kaylee Kastrup, Morgan McCardell and Tatiana McCuaig chipped in with one apiece. Jordan Card drew four ejections and Jane Galluzzi finished with three.

Splitting time in front of the cage, Kylee Tomasetti got the start, blocking six shots with a steal in the opening galf before Gina Merry took over to record four more saves with a trio of steals.

Unfortunately, Cal Lutheran came up on the short end of a double overtime thriller in which the Regals fell 9-8 to Redlands, squashing any title hopes the Violet and Gold had.

When the two teams met on April 13 it was the home CLU squad that came-from-behind for a 10-8 victory in a must-win game. Today, with everything on the line, the pesky Regals again erased an early deficit in another game that was never more than two goals and forced an overtime period, but it was the Bulldogs who prevailed.

UR got out to a 3-1 lead after the opening frame, but Cal Lutheran chipped away, outscoring the Redlands 3-2 in the second stanza to take the momentum and pull within one at 5-4 going into the intermission. After surrendering a goal early in the third period, the Regals responded with two unanswered goals to knot the teams at 6-6 going into the final quarter.

Each team found the back of the net late in the fourth to force the extra sessions as the teams were locked at 7-7 after regulation.

The first three minute overtime saw the teams exchange goals. During the second OT, the Bulldogs turned to Jill Stein for the game-winner with 1:41 left on the clock, stripping of any chance of earning a SCIAC title in 2013.

Five players scored with Kehau Ai, Adrienne Ingalla and Morgan McCardell each tallying a pair and Jane Galluzzi and Shannon Streeter chipping in with one apiece. Jordan Card did not find the back of the net, but was responsible for two assists and four drawn ejections.

Both Galluzzi and McCardell came up with four steals and Kylee Tomasetti nabbed a pair while blocking six shots in front of the CLU cage during the 30 minutes of action.

Bulldog goalie Julie Lupfer made 14 saves, including four in OT.

Cal Lutheran (11-15, 5-4 SCIAC) will play La Verne (12-23, 2-9) on Saturday, April 28 at 5:30 p.m. at Pasadena City College.

Undoubtedly, the Regals are ready for the challenge. Going into the tournament the Violet and Gold have won three straight, their longest win-streak on a schedule that featured many of the top Division I teams in the country earlier this spring.
To open the weekend CLU is pitted against Redlands. On senior day, April 13, at the Samuelson Aquatics Center the Regals used a solid second half to come-from-behind for a 10-8 victory over the Bulldogs.
Pacing the offense has been Jordan Card who has provided 44 goals and 46 drawn ejections to lead the squad. She has added 10 assists and come up with 20 steals as well. Adrienne Ingalla has netted 32 goals and Jane Galluzzi is third in line with 28. Morgan McCardell has handed out a team-high 23 assists, followed closely by Kehau Ai (21) and Galluzzi (20). Ai, Galluzzi and McCardell have drawn 27, 26 and 25 ejections, respectively for CLU.
Defensively, Ingalla has clearly been a nuisance to the opposition with 60 steals and seven field blocks. Kaylee Kastrup has also provided well rounded performances all season. Currently she is second on the team with 49 steals, adding 17 assists, 15 goals and 13 drawn ejections.
Senior goalkeeper, Kylee Tomasetti has had a standout year with 239 blocks, adding 41 steals. Galluzzi also has 41 steals for the Regals in 2013.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (7-1) tops the field followed by Pomona-Pitzer (6-2) and Whittier (6-2) to round out the top three. Behind CLU (5-3) are Redlands (5-3), Occidental (4-4), Chapman (2-6), La Verne (1-7) and Caltech (0-8).
Games begin on Friday, April 26 at 1:00 p.m. with five games scheduled on the hour and a half with the final contest of the day set for 7:00 p.m. The SCIAC Tournament champion will advance to the NCAA Post Season.
Tournament Central: 2013 Women’s Water Polo SCIAC Championships
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/clusports

Regals Round Out Regular Season with Rout

Cal Lutheran closed out its regular season by winning its third straight game after routing La Verne 13-2 Wednesday evening.

LA VERNE, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran women’s water polo team will be one of the hottest teams headed into the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) tournament this weekend after defeating La Verne 13-2 Wednesday evening. The win marked the third a row for the Regals, their longest streak of the season.

After scoring a goal in the first quarter and three in the second, Cal Lutheran exploded for seven goals in the third quarter and extended its lead to 11-1. The Regals would tack on two more goals in the final period while La Verne got its second goal of the game to close out the scoring.

Goalkeeper Kylee Tomasetti was the story of the game as the senior had a career-high seven steals to go along with four blocks despite only playing in three quarters. Gina Merry came on in the fourth quarter, registering four blocks and securing the win for the Regals.

Cal Lutheran had a balanced offensive attack with eight different players scoring. Jordan Card led the way with three goals while Adrienne Ingalla and Julia Samarin both netted two. Kehau Ai, Kaylee Kastrup, Morgan McCardell, Shannon Streeter and Skylar Vasquez also joined in the scoring, all notching a goal.

Amanda Jones chipped in with three assists.

Defensively, the Regals were led by Ingalla’s six steals while McCardell had three and Jane Galuzzi had two field blocks.

In a must-win game for the Regals, it was a second half surge that propelled the Purple and Gold to a two-goal win in a physical game that never saw the teams separated by more than a pair. While CLU netted five combined goals in the third and fourth quarters, the defense executed and held Redlands to just one each frame as the Regals completed the come-from-behind win over the Bulldogs.

Overall, freshman Amanda Jones produced the best game of her collegiate career with a three-goal, two assist performance. Not to be outdone, senior Morgan McCardell added a hat-trick of her own with two drawn ejections and an assist. Adrienne Ingalla scored twice with Kaylee Kastrup and senior Jane Galluzzi tallying one goal apiece to round out the offensive output.

The scoring started with a 5-meter shot from UR early in the opening frame. Minutes later McCardell picked off a UR pass for a steal that led to the first CLU goal of the day. Ingalla found the back of the net after Jordan Card handed the ball off to Kastrup who passed across the pool to Ingalla. Jones then scored her first of the game with 2:57 to play in the first quarter, but with 14 ticks remaining UR equalized.

CLU won the second sprint and scored first when Galluzzi found an open Ingalla in front of the cage. UR used a put-back goal after one of the Bulldogs hit the crossbar to again knot the teams at 3-3. A skip shot on the ensuing possession gave Redlands a 4-3 advantage. Kehau Ai drew a 5-meter shot and Jones converted it at the 3:03 mark to make things even once again. The next two goals belonged to the Maroon and Gray

Trailing 6-4 with 1:58 to play in the second stanza, Jonesassisted Galluzziwho got the home squad back within one at the break.

That goal sparked a 3-0 run as Cal Lutheran outscored Redlands 6-2 over the final 17:58. In the third quarter McCardell scored all three CLU goals, pulling ahead 8-7 entering the final eight minutes of action.

UR tied the game just 49 seconds into the fourth quarter, but it was all Regals to the finish line. Kastrup broke an 8-8 tie when the UR goalie came out of the cage, pushing the ball across the goal line. After a Cal Lutheran timeout, the Violet and Gold again executed their game plan and Jones scored an insurance goal on an assist from Ingalla with just under two minutes remaining in regulation. With less than a minute to play, Kastrup came up with a steal and CLU used up the shot clock. Redlands took a timeout with 23 second to go and at 11 seconds a shot was turned away by senior goalkeeper Kylee Tomasetti to secure the victory.

Tomasetti finished her final home game with five blocks and four steals. Kastrup also finished with four steals and Ai tallied three. Additionally, Kastrup chipped in with a pair of assists to go along with her fourth quarter goal and Ingalla handed out one assist to go join her two goals.

Galluzzi wrapped up her career at the SAC with two steals, a goal and an assist while McCardell filled up the stat sheet with three goals, two drawn ejections and an assist. Shannon Streeter concluded her senior home schedule with a drawn ejection.

For Redlands, Moana Tupulotu and Jaci Cochrane each scored twice and Julie Lupfer recorded 11 saves as the goalie.

Cal Lutheran (10-14, 4-3 SCIAC) rounds out the regular season on Wednesday, April 17 when the Regals travel to Las Flores Park to take on La Verne at 5:00 p.m.

As the first event of the Second Annual Division III Week, the water polo team gave the fans an offensive clinic as they seemingly scored at will during an eight-goal first quarter. Caltech broke in on the scoring with 2:14 to play in the second quarter and netted a pair in the period, but the Violet and Gold pushed their lead to 12-2 at the intermission.

After halftime the Regals came back to tack on three more in the third to lead 15-3 going into the final frame. Cal Lutheran scored four with Caltech tallying three in the final eight minutes of action.

Every player suited up for CLU today contributed something positive to the victory, which got the Regals back in the win column and even in league play at 3-3.

While a dozen different Regals scored at least one time, Caltech got five of six goals from Hanna Dodd. CLU looked to freshman Julia Samarin for a hat-trick, with all three coming in the second quarter, while Kehau Ai, Morgan Cook, Jane Galluzzi, Sami Harvey, Madison Jaramillo and Bailey Likewise each scored a pair.

Twelve of the 19 goals had assists today with Ai, Kaylee Kastrup, Morgan McCardell and Illissa Mestas handing out a pair apiece. The two CLU drawn ejections came from Ai and Samarin.

Defensively, Gina Merry played the whole game in front of the cage, turning away 12 Beavers shots. Both Samarin and Jordan Card recorded two steals while Samarin added a field block. Skylar Vasquez also had a field block for the Regals today.

Cal Lutheran (9-14, 3-3 SCIAC) will play the final home game of 2013 on Saturday, April 13 against Redlands at 11:00 a.m. Prior to first sprint four Cal Lutheran seniors will be honored.

During the week of April 8-14, all members will host Division III Week, aimed at celebrating what those schools have to offer student-athletes in the classroom, in the field of play and in the community.

There are 178,441 DIII student-athletes as compared to 459,253 in Division I and II combined from coast to coast. Division III, however, represents the largest division in the NCAA at 40 percent of the total membership.

The NCAA sponsors 28 Championship events with 14 for men and 14 for women. There are also eight National Collegiate Championships. Overall, CLU sponsors 20 intercollegiate athletic programs, which is above the average (17) of like institutions.

Cal Lutheran is one of the 80 percent of active institutions that are private with 20 percent of DIII schools on public campuses. Across the board the average enrollment of Division III schools is 2,734.

All of the schools that fall in the Division III category are expected to promote the model of discover, develop and dedicate. CLU is right on track with that mantra by succeeding academically and athletically while giving back to the community.

In 2013 there will be CLU 147 student-athletes inducted into the Scholar Athlete Society by holding a 3.40 or higher cumulative grade point average. This number is higher than it has ever been and numerous student-athletes throughout the season have earned both Academic All-SCIAC and other sport specific academic accolades.

CLU teams have been just as successful on the field, court, course and in the pool with 10 teams earning national rankings in 2012-13. Both men’s golf and women’s water polo have held No. 1 rankings in their respective polls this year. CLU teams have claimed four Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) titles thus far with four teams and one athlete advancing to NCAA Championship play. The spring sports have much hope to increase those numbers with more than half of the teams in the hunt for a league title.

Beyond those two areas, CLU students have also taken time to give back. One example is the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) that is headed in 2012-13 by Lauren Rasmussen. She and the other SAAC members have put together a community service project in conjunction with DIII Week.

The group is scheduled to do a Ball and Old Sports Equipment Drive throughout the week of April 8-12. Items will be collected both at the Welcome Desk of the Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center during all hours of operation and in the Athletics Offices during operating business hours (9-5). Additionally, SAAC members will be stationed at the flagpole on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to collect items. All donations will be delivered to the Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Conejo Valley.

“The biggest thing with this event is that it is something that the SAAC wants to turn into an annual event during DIII Week and we are really excited about it,” Rasmussen said. “The connection to athletics with equipment collection, plus the opportunity to give back to the community by donating items that student-athletes are involved with competitively every day is very rewarding.”

Student Life will be sponsoring a series of student giveaways at a variety of athletic events during Division III Week as well.

Cal Lutheran sunglasses will be given out at Men’s Tennis against No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Poulson Tennis Center to kick off the weekend. On Wednesday, April 10 the water polo team will host Caltech and rally towels will be handed out at the entrance to the Samuelson Aquatics Center. Women’s Tennis fans will have a chance to claim sunglasses on Friday, April 12 when the Regals host Occidental at 2:00 p.m. At Hutton Field softball will host Redlands where seat cushions will be available for student fans at 2:00 p.m. At 3:00 p.m. in Ullman Stadium baseball fans can obtain a stadium cup as the Kingsmen host Whittier. Additionally, free Shave It coupons will be distributed to the first 250 students at any of the games.

Finally, the dining commons will be offering sports themed meals and snacks throughout the week, including a nacho bar, Dodger Dogs, peanuts and popcorn, BBQ Tri-Tip sandwiches and soft pretzels with cheese sauce.

“Excitement is beginning to be generated around Division III week on campus,” Director of Athletics Dan Kuntz shared. “We are looking forward to being a part of this unique campaign to promote Division III and the student-athletes we support year in and year out.”

Jordan Card paced the offensive effort with a hat-trick as well a season-high seven drawn ejections for the Violet and Gold.
Galluzzi was recovering from a car accident in which she suffered serious internal injuries, including a ruptured spleen and kidney.

Galluzzi’s parents knew she would “freak out” once the doctor told her she couldn’t play water polo for a few months.

They told their daughter she could take the rest of her senior year off from Cal Lutheran and return to the team once she was healthy.

“They wanted me to recover from the accident without school or water polo distracting me,” Galluzzi said. “It was nice of them to support me and give me that option.”

Galluzzi worked at a local public relations firm last year, but her mind never drifted far from the pool.

She was excited to finally get back in the water with her teammates this season. The 5-foot-10 utility player has provided an expected boost.

Galluzzi has scored 23 goals, and continued her stellar defensive play with a team-leading 36 steals.

“It was hard coming back at first. I am not going to lie,” Galluzzi said. “There are just so many things you forget about the sport when you are not playing, such as how intense it is. It’s really competitive out there and there is a lot of grabbing. It took me a while to get back into that mindset, but it’s gotten much better.”

Galluzzi has been impressed with the young talent on CLU’s team. At age 23, she is a few years older than many of her teammates.

“I have a lot of experience I can share with them because I have played on the team that went to the NCAA tournament my freshman year,” Galluzzi said. “It is cool to give the girls a lot of perspective on how to play through a season and play under pressure.”

CLU head coach Craig Rond is glad to have Galluzzi back in the lineup.

“I believe the extra year has truly helped her as she is so much more mature as an athlete and person,” Rond said. “She plays with a great deal of passion and energy. She’s a constant worker throughout games.”

Raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Galluzzi knew she wanted to play college water polo in California at the Division III level.

Her guidance counselor provided Galluzzi with a list of schools, and she visited most of the SCIAC institutions.

During her visit to CLU, an added attraction on campus caught her eye.

“They had the men’s Olympic water polo team practicing at our pool and of course I told my mom, ‘This is awesome. This school is great,’” Galluzzi said. “Then I met Coach Rond and he was awesome too. I knew CLU was the best fit for me.”

Although Galluzzi is climbing the career goal-scoring charts at CLU — she’s No. 7 all-time with 97 — she hardly pays attention to her status.

“I am definitely a player who lives in the present,” she said. “I have learned so much through this program and the great coaches here. They are like a second family, especially to the out-of-state players. It’s just awesome to be a part of this program and I am glad to have so many great memories.”

Galluzzi hopes to make a few more before her career is over. Her parents are scheduled to visit at the end of the month, and will be glad to see their daughter back in the pool instead of in the hospital.

“They are coming to the SCIAC tournament and they are really excited,” Galluzzi said. “They would rather go to that than my graduation.”

Regals Water Polo Washes Out Chapman

With the stands full of fans and alumni the Cal Lutheran women’s water polo team doubled up Chapman, 12-6, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) victory at the Samuelson Aquatics Center today.

THOUSAND OAKS Calif. – With the stands full of fans and alumni the Cal Lutheran women’s water polo team doubled up Chapman, 12-6, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) victory at the Samuelson Aquatics Center today.

Kehau Ai won the sprints for CLU in both the first and second periods and Jane Galluzzi promptly scored in each. Galluzzi and Adrienne Ingalla shared the team-high with a hat-trick apiece.

The first goal of the game came 52 seconds into play on a five-meter shot from Galluzzi. At the 4:05 mark Chapman equalized, but CLU would reel off a string of five unanswered goals to take a 6-1 lead and the momentum of the contest.

Sparking that run was Ingalla who scored on an assist from Amanda Jones. The next CLU possession began with Kaylee Kastrup earning a steal before handing the ball over to Tatiana McCuaig who scored with 1:32 to play in the opening frame.

The second stanza began much the same as the first with Ai winning the spring and Galluzzi finding the back of the net on a cross-pool pass from Morgan McCardell.Kastrup stepped up defensively again with a field block to regain possession of the ball. Jordan Card fed the ball to Galluzzi with 5:41 in the quarter and then McCuaig assisted Skylar Vasquez for the sixth goal of the game.

Looking as if the CLU defense had forced a turnover on a shot clock violation, the Panthers Alison Quincy fired off a shot from 8m out that found its way to the back of their cage as one of her three goals.

Cal Lutheran led 6-2 at the intermission.

After the break, Ingalla scored the ultimate winning goal as CLU executed a 6-on-5 situation for a 7-3 advantage. Card got her only steal of the day and converted it into a one-on-one goal to push the CLU lead to 8-3. With eight seconds to play in the third Ingalla scored her second of the frame on a five-meter shot to put CLU ahead 9-4.

The fourth quarter saw Jones score a pair. She tipped the ball past the CU goalie after recovering a rebound from her own shot that hit the crossbar to start the scoring in the final eight minutes.

Senior center Shannon Streeter got in on the action with a behind-the-back goal with 6:20 remaining in regulation. CLU tacked on one more with 2:39 on another man-up opportunity. After drawing the ejection, the Regals took a timeout and came back to implement the play with Jones scoring on a pass from Julia Samarin.

Overall, Ingalla had three goals and three drawn ejections while Galluzzi had three goals and two drawn ejection. Jones and Ai shared the team-lead with two assists apiece. Kastrup drew an ejection and handed out an assist for the Violet and Gold today.

Defensively, Kylee Tomasetti finished with 12 blocks in front of the cage, adding a steal. CLU combined for four field blocks with Ai, Kastrup, Ingalla and McCardell each recording one. Ai came up with four steals, Kastrup tallied three and Ingalla added two.

Chapman was paced by Quincy with three goals. Kate Staskus, Samantha Martin and Samantha McLaughlin each scored as well. CU goalie, Jordan Gilmore, had seven saves.

Cal Lutheran (8-12, 2-1 SCIAC) will be on the road Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Whittier (13-15, 3-0) for a 5:00 p.m. showdown with the league-leading Poets.

The flow of the game was steady from the start and the intensity was apparent between the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) No. 2 Sagehens and the No. 3 Regals.

The Sagehens took a 2-1 first quarter lead, but CLU responded by winning the second period 3-2 for a tie at the break. The third quarter was the most offensive as the teams combined for nine goals with CLU holding a 5-4 edge to take a 9-8 lead into the final eight minutes when the teams exchanged goals.

PP struck first with a five-meter goal, which they followed with a man-up goal to take a 2-0 lead. With 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Morgan McCardell netted a five-meter shot of her own to get CLU on the board and cut the deficit in half entering the second period of play.

Cal Lutheran won the sprint to start the stanza and Shannon Streeter promptly knotted the teams at 2-2. The Regals would then take their first lead of the contest at the 4:30 mark when Jane Galluzzi scored on an assist from Streeter as the shot clock ticked down to one.

After PP tied it up at 3-3, Amanda Jones gave CLU their fourth goal on a spin move in front of the cage to find the back of the net with 2:01 to play in the half.

The Sagehens scored on the ensuing possession to again tie the teams.

Kylee Tomasetti recorded her sixth save of the opening half to keep the teams even. Although CLU had one more chance, the Regals and Hens went into the intermission locked at 4-4.

After the break, Pomona-Pitzer took another lead when Tomasetti came out of the cage and the Sagehens scored from set to go up 5-4.

At the Regals end of the pool on the next play, Galluzzi found Streeter for a behind-the-back goal to again tie the teams at 5-5. McCardell then scored her second of the game on an assist from Jordan Card who was being double teamed as the CLU center.

Pomona-Pitzer equalized, but Card came back on a pass from Adrienne Ingalla to cap off a string of four consecutive possessions in which the teams scored, also giving CLU a lead they would not relinquish for the final 13 minutes of action.

A CLU steal led to their second score in as many shots with Galluzzi giving the Regals a two-goal edge with just under five minutes to play in the third.

The Sagehens netted a skip shot to quickly cut that advantage to one, but again Card pushed the gap to a pair at 9-7 in favor of the Regals at 3:17.

After PP retaliated with 2:18 remaining in the frame, Tomasetti turned away two more PP attempts in the third to keep CLU ahead 9-8.

After winning the final sprint of the game, it was the defense and Tomasetti who stepped up. The teams would each add just one more goal in the game. At the 5:47 mark in the fourth quarter McCardell would score the ultimate winning goal.

Earning a man up with 3:54 in regulation, the CLU coaches called a time out and the Regals nearly converted the opportunity for an insurance goal.

The Sagehens were not done and with 40 seconds to play PP put the pressure on by pulling within one at 10-9.

The Regals passed the ball around to kill the shot clock and following a PP timeout w five seconds remaining, the final Sagehens surge was stopped by the defense to lock up the win.

Tomasetti tallied 16 saves while her counterpart Sarah Tuggy recorded 12 for the Hens. The CLU goalie added a steal with Galluzzi and Streeter coming away with a pair apiece. Ingalla recorded two field blocks today.

Offensively, McCardell led the attack with a hat-trick while Card, Galluzzi and Streeter each added two. Galluzzi also handed out a trio of assists and Card finished with a pair.

Pomona-Pitzer was paced by Katy Schafer and Sarah Westcott who scored three goals apiece.

Earlier this season in a non-conference match up CLU defeated PP 9-8.

Cal Lutheran (7-12, 1-1 SCIAC) will be back at the Samuelson Aquatics Center on Saturday, March 30 to host Chapman at 11:00 a.m.

Oxy took a 5-3 first quarter lead and pushed the gap to 9-6 at the intermission. It proved to be too much of a deficit for the Violet and Gold to dig out of, though they made a late push.

Trailing by six, 14-8, with 6:42 to play in the final quarter, CLU netted four goals in four minutes to get within a pair. Shannon Streeter scored two of her three goals with under 6:30 in the fourth frame.

In the early game the Regals defeated St. Francis 17-10 before piecing together a come-from-behind, 9-7, double overtime win over George Washington in the night cap.

CLU battled GWU from the beginning and never got rattled despite highs and lows in the pool. A very physical contest was a defensive battle that was the epitome of a total team effort by the Regals.

After the Colonials took an early 2-0 lead in the first 1:17 the Regals settled in. A number of possession changes at the Regals end of the pool took place in the next two minutes of action before CLU was able to capitalize. Shannon Streeter put up the first crooked number for the home squad on an assist from Kaylee Kastrup. At the 1:31 mark Kehau Ai knotted the teams with a man-up goal from eight meters out at the top of the key.

In the second stanza GWU netted a pair and CLU was scoreless, but it was the Cal Lutheran defense that stepped up and made a huge difference in the frame. When starting goalie, Kylee Tomasetti, was ejected, the Regals came together to guard the cage. Skylar Vasquez, one of five CLU players to have a hand up as George Washington attempted to score in the man-up opportunity, recorded one of her two field blocks in the game on the play, keeping the Colonials from adding to their lead.

Trailing 4-2 at the break, the teams exchanged goals in the third with Morgan McCardell finding the back of the net on an assist from Amanda Jones with 30 seconds to go in the period.

Everything went the Regals way in the fourth quarter. Jane Galluzzi won her second sprint of the game to set the stage. A steal set up McCardell for her second goal in as many shots in a one-on-one situation at the GWU end of the pool to pull CLU within one at 5-4. A minute and a half later Ai tied things up again with a lob shot to bring the teams even at 5-5.

The next three and a half minutes were scoreless until a skip shot by Erin Donoghue gave the Colonials another lead. A GWU ejection put CLU in an advantage, which they were able to capitalize on as McCardell lobbed the ball in for a hat-trick and another tie.

Cal Lutheran used a solid defensive possession to force GWU into a turnover, as the shot clock expired with four seconds remaining in regulation. A time out gave the Regals a chance to win it without extra water polo, but the final shot caught the cross bar, sending the teams into overtime.

The first OT started in favor of CLU as Ai won her second sprint of the day. Card scored twice in the three minute period with the second representing the ultimate winning goal as the Colonials were kept off the board.

In the second OT period Galluzzi added an insurance goal on a man-up situation to give CLU a 9-6 lead. With 43 seconds to play GWU added to their tally, but it was the Regals who wrapped up the win.

In front of the cage Tomasetti blocked 10 shots, adding a steal. Adrienne Ingalla led all players with six steals and Ai added three with a pair of field blocks to tie for the game-high with teammate Vasquez.

Offensively, McCardell led all players with three goals and both Ai and Card added two. Ai, Ingalla and Kastrup were responsible for the three assists in the game and Ai Card, Galluzzi and McCardell each drew a pair of ejections.

Game one of the day saw CLU take an early 5-3 lead and though the score was knotted a trio of times, the Regals controlled the pace throughout. Cal Lutheran used nine first half goals to take a two goal, 9-7, lead at the intermission en route to the 17-10 win.

After the break the Regals added to their tally and doubled the lead while allowing just one SFU goal, taking a 12-8 advantage going into the final eight minutes of play.

CLU tacked on four insurance goals in the final frame as all 17 active players saw time in the pool during the contest. Nine different Regals scored with Galluzzipacing the pack with five. Ingallaalso had a hat-trick while both Cardand Streeterscored a pair.

Card continued her tear as she drew a team-high three ejections and also handed out a trio of assists to share the lead team-lead with Ai. Galluzzi and McCardell drew a pair apiece.

Cal Lutheran (6-11) opens Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play on Wednesday, March 20 when they travel to Occidental to face the Tigers at 5:00 p.m.
