Federal Direct Subsidized Loan: 150% Eligibility Limitation
October 18, 2013
As a result of the Public Law 112-141, Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21) enacted in July 2012, students who are first time borrowers on or after July 1, 2013 will now be limited to receiving subsidized loan funds for only 150% of the published length of their academic program regardless of if they have met the aggregate limit of subsidized funds ($23,000). Any remaining loan amount eligibility will be received only as Unsubsidized Stafford funds.
Example: If you are in a 4 year degree program, you may receive Subsidized Stafford Funds for up to 6 years. After that time, if you were to attend an additional semester (and had any loan eligibility remaining) you would only be eligible to receive an Unsubsidized Loan.
