Important Policy Change

April 27, 2012

California Lutheran University is required by federal regulations to monitor Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) toward graduation for all financial aid recipients. This is in addition to Cal Lutheran's institutional academic progress policies and policies related to Academic Scholarship Eligibility (ASE) and Institutional Aid Eligibility (IAE). The policies related to SAP, ASE, and IAE are posted on the Office of Financial Aid's website.

The Office of Financial Aid has made updates to its policies regarding SAP, ASE, and IAE. These updated policies go into effect starting with the review of students' academic progress at the conclusion of the Spring 2012 semester. The full policy can be reviewed on the website for the Office of Financial Aid at www.callutheran.edu/financialaid, click on SAP on the left-hand menu. We strongly encourage you to read the full policy online as you are responsible for understanding the policy; however, we have outlined the major changes here:

- Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), Academic Scholarship Eligibility (ASE), and Institutional Aid Eligibility (IAE) will be reviewed once per year following the posting of grades at the end of the Spring term.

- Students who are not making SAP at the time of review will be placed on Financial Aid Suspension and will not be eligible for any financial aid. Under federal regulations, because SAP is reviewed once per year, there is no warning period.

- Students who are not making ASE at the time of review will be placed on Academic Scholarship Eligibility Warning (ASE Warning) and will have one year to increase their GPAs or will be placed on Academic Scholarship Eligibility Suspension (ASE Suspension) and will not be eligible for their academic scholarships. This one year warning period applies to students placed on ASE Warning starting with the May 2012 evaluation.

- Students are eligible to receive Institutional Aid for up to 8 semesters or 140 units, whichever comes first. This includes any transfer units, repeated coursework, remedial classes, consortium agreement credits, and/or college classes taken while in high school. If students reach 124 units at the time of evaluation, a warning notification will be sent; however, students will be placed on Institutional Aid Eligibility Suspension (IAE Suspension) and not eligible for Institutional Aid once they reach 140 or more units at the time of evaluation, regardless of whether or not they received a warning notification.

- Students cannot appeal a "potential" Suspension. Students must be notified of their Suspension status before they can submit an appeal and the appeal must be submitted using the appropriate appeal form.
