Position Title

Hiring Range: $11.88 - $14.78
Basic Function
Under the direction of the Grounds Supervisor, perform maintenance and gardening duties on campus grounds including landscaped areas and athletic fields; assist in planning and maintaining irrigation systems and in maintaining grounds maintenance equipment; assure pest, weed and disease control and apply pesticides and herbicides.
Representative Duties
Perform general ground maintenance duties in picking up paper and trash in ground areas; clean and remove weeds from flowerbeds, sidewalks, parking lots and roads.
Plant, cultivate, prune and fertilize lawns, trees and shrubs.
Water lawns, plants, flowerbeds and fields; hoe weeds and rake lawns; transplant and pot plants and flowers.
Mix and apply pesticides and herbicides to eliminate plant diseases and insects to control weeds according to established procedures.
Operate and maintain equipment such as tractor, riding and push mowers, trimmers, chain saw and other large grounds maintenance equipment; drive truck to conduct work; operate and maintain a variety of hand and basic power equipment.
Prepare, maintain and line athletic fields; prepare athletic courts for scheduled programs as assigned.
Assist with special projects including irrigation pipe installation, concrete work and other related projects as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge Of
Methods, tools, materials, equipment and practices utilized in grounds maintenance and gardening work.
Mowing, edging, hoeing and other basic grounds maintenance procedures.
Regulations and safety precautions related to the use and application of pesticides and herbicides.
Landscape practices and operations.
Ability To
Cultivate, fertilize, water and spray planted areas properly.
Learn methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in grounds keeping.
Make independent judgments within the framework of good gardening practices.
Treat plant diseases and problems.
Participate in maintenance of ground areas.
Operate and maintain hand and basic power equipment including mowers, edgers, trimmers and other ground maintenance equipment.
Utilize appropriate methods and materials for control and eradication of plant pests and weeds.
Meet schedules and time lines.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions in English.
Communicate in English.
Education and Experience
Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.

Valid California driver’s license and safe driving record.
Indoor and outdoor work environment.
Subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work.
Exposure to pollen, dust and dirt.
Extreme weather conditions.

Sitting, standing and walking up to 8 hours per day.
Bending at the waist.
Crawling, kneeling, stooping, squatting or crouching while working.
Climbing ladders and stairs.
Walking over rough or uneven surfaces.
Ability to hear and speak to exchange information.
Adequate eyesight to perform tasks and drive vehicles.
Pulling, pushing and carrying up to 50lbs.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized hand and power tools and equipment.
Reaching and working horizontally, above the shoulders and overhead, up to 25 lbs.

Exposure to pesticide and herbicide chemicals.
Fumes and noise from vehicle and equipment operation.
Working with or around machinery with moving parts.
Working at heights.
