Department of Religion

Theology and Christian Leadership Major

In addition to the traditional Religion major, the Religion Department offers a second major, Theology and Christian Leadership. Designed for students who want training in specific areas of lay ministry, the major includes current religion courses as well as courses in other departments and Schools and new religion courses to be developed appropriate to the major. Students will select one of four areas for specialization: Christian Education, Church Administration, Worship and Music, or Youth and Family ministry.

Required Courses:
  • Religion 100, 370, 435, 492
  • choose 4 credits from Religion 310-313 (Hebrew Bible/Old Testament)
  • choose 4 credits from Religion 320-323 or 327 (New Testament)
  • choose 4 credits from Religion 331-335 or 340-347 (Church History or Theology)
  • choose 4 credits from Religion 350-356 (Ethics)

Emphasis Options

Christian Education

Required Courses: Take 4 courses from the following: Business 370 or Communication 348; Psychology 304 or 305; Communication 335 or Psychology 325 or SOC 300; SOC 320; Criminology 340 or 350

Church Administration Emphasis

Required Courses: Take 4 courses from the following: Business 253 or 251; Business 301 or Communication 306; Business 342, 375, or 445; Business 381 or Communication 348; Business 361, 367, 449, or Communication 335; Business 501.

Worship and Music Emphasis

Required Courses: Take all of the following: Music 107, 108, 109, 110, 111, 112, 309; Religion 392; Two semesters of voice, guitar, or keyboard (Music 113, 114, 116, 140, 141, 142, 143E, 340, 341, 342, 343E); Two semesters of a choral ensemble (Music 150, 180, 350, 380).

Youth and Family Ministry

Required Courses: Take 4 courses from the following: Criminology 340; Theatre Arts 440; Business 370 or Communications 348; Communications 335 or Psychology 325; Psychology 304 or 305; SOC 300, 320 or 370.
