Requirement: Limit disruption of natural hydrology and reduce or eliminate water pollution by reducing impervious cover, increasing on-site infiltration and managing the stormwater runoff, eliminating sources of contaminants and removing pollutants from stormwater runoff.
Implementation: Since the building site was previously paved tennis courts which was 100% impervious, CLU has reduced the site runoff and volume by the creation of landscaping areas around the building to allow stormwater to percolate into the soil. The pervious paving in the courtyard areas also helps to reduce the site runoff. The rate of the stormwater runoff and the volume are further reduced by the use of bio-retention cells in four of the landscape areas. The bio-retention cells and bioswales around the project will capture and treat 90% of the average annual rainfall.
The bio-retention cell and bioswale system will remove 80% of the total suspended solids and pollutants in the stormwater runoff. After the stormwater runoff leaves the Swenson Center site, it flows through the campus is treated again in the campus constructed wetlands/detention area prior to final discharge.
