Our experienced tutors are happy to help CLU students in all stages of the writing process, from generating ideas to refining final drafts. We are available for 30 minute or 1 hour individual, face to face consultations. We have skilled writing tutors at the Thousand Oaks, Woodland Hills, and Oxnard campuses.
Our PhilosophyThe Writing Center believes that it is important to create better writers, not just better papers. Tutors are therefore trained to act as interested audience members, rather than as professional editors or proofreaders. They will actively collaborate with students on ways to improve their writing by asking lots of questions, giving feedback, and demonstrating self-editing strategies that can be applied to future writing tasks.
What to Expect
We recommend that students book their first appointment well in advance of their deadline so they have time to book another appointment if necessary.
Tutors may not have time to point out every error in a student's paper. They will first address higher order concerns (looking for a concise purpose or thesis statement, coherent and cohesive organization, and a clear sense of audience) before moving to other areas, such as grammar, punctuation, syntax, and diction.
Formatting styles are important in academic writing, but our tutors are not required to memorize every nuance of ACS, AMA, AP, APA, ASA, CMS (Chicago), CSE, MLA, Turabian, and Vancouver styles.
That said, tutors are familiar with the basics of most of these styles, and will be happy to consult the numerous print and electronic resources for answers to formatting questions.
Students should book appointments in advance, particularly during mid-terms and at the end of the semester.

Please note that when it comes to appointments, writers are limited to one hour a day and two scheduled hours per week. There are two reasons for this limit: first, we’d like students to have time to try out and apply the writing strategies they discussed with their tutor, so it’s good to have space between appointments to work independently; second, we want to serve as many CLU students as possible during the hours we have available.
If you cannot make your scheduled appointment, please cancel online at least an hour in advance so that we can help another student during your scheduled time slot.
